Milestone: Peninsula Adventist students help at Food Bank

Six students, one brother of a student, and one parent from Peninsula Adventist Elementary School showed up at the Sequim Food Bank on Jan. 3 to help out in honor of the holidays.

When they arrived, theystarted sorting cans, jars and packaged foods into different food categories and checked expiration dates. The students sorted an entire pallet, and several smaller crates. Students who volunteered and came to help said they had a fun time helping out.

“It was really fun! I was very happy to give my time up and serve,” student Isabella Salazar said.

Fellow student Andrew Larson said they had fun looking at the expiration dates, too. Staff at the food bank told others they were impressed by how much we were able to accomplish in the short time we were there.

The Sequim Food Bank feeds more than 15, 000 families each year thanks to the financial support of many individuals, organizations, businesses, church congregations and local foundations. Their volunteer crew is more than 60 adults and teenagers.

“I was impressed with all of our students,” parent Randal Wilson said.

“They all worked hard and also had a fun time while they helped at the food bank. Ms. (Lynn) Berg had all the students organized and everyone had a task. The staff at the food bank were impressed by how much we were able to do while we were there.

“The way they all represented our school and church was amazing and commendable. I felt honored to be a part of what we did that day.”

This was students’ first service project for the school year, and they are looking for other opportunities to serve the community. School staff can be reached at 360-683-6170 or paesinfosequim@gmail.com.
