New York, New York, it’s benefit time

For one night only, New York comes to Port Angeles.

Readers Theatre Plus presents “An Evening of New York Songs” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at First Presbyterian Church, 139 W. Eighth St., Port Angeles.

Vicki Helwick, a Port Angeles-based vocalist, and pianist Anna Nichols present the musical tribute to The Big Apple as a benefit for the Port Angeles High School Orchestra’s upcoming trip to Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Together, the two women perform a wide variety of tunes from movies and Broadway hit shows such as “New York, New York,” “Broadway Rhythm,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “American Tune,” “Chelsea Morning” and more.

As customary with Readers Theatre Plus events, the show is free. Donations are accepted for the Orchestra Parents United for Students, OPUS, the booster organization for the high school orchestra program overseeing all plans for the trip to New York. Proceeds help with fundraising, air travel and student activities while in the city. More than 100 students are expected to make the trip.

Beginning in 1989 the high school orchestra, directed by Ron Jones, has traveled to New York City every four years to perform at Carnegie Hall. This year’s orchestra concert will play on Easter Sunday, March 31.
