Organizers of Olympic Theatre Arts hope you’ll find the humor in love with their latest show “I Do! I Do!”.

Described by director Charlotte Carroll as a couple time-traveling through the peaks and valleys of their relationship, “I Do! I Do!” follows couple Michael and Agnes, played by Ron Graham and Angela Poynter-Lemaster, from their first night together in 1895 to moving out of their home in 1945.

The show, written by Tom Jones with music by Harvey Schmidt and based on the “The Fourposter” by Jan De Hartog, begins its run Feb. 5 with a preview night on Thursday, Feb. 4, and a pay what you will night on Thursday, Feb. 11.

Carroll said, “Whether you are married or not, been in love or ever thought about marriage, it’s sure to amuse,” and that the music is great, which features well-known song “My Cup Runneth Over” and live instrumentation from Geri Zanon and Rick Marschall on piano and drums.

“There’s never a dull moment from getting married to having children to making up,” Carroll said. “It should make you laugh and cry.”

This is Graham and Poynter-Lemaster’s sixth production working together after appearing in “The Man Who Came Dinner” at OTA.

“They are both so in tune with what’s happening,” Carroll said. “When they get it right, it’s magic. They are a joy to work with.”

Graham jokes he helped discover Poynter-Lemaster when he cast her for Port Angeles Community Players’ show “Broadway Nights” shortly after she moved to the Olympic Peninsula a few years ago.

“I think we have a good rapport,” he said. “It makes it much easier. We both feel comfortable. When I screw up, I know she’ll be there to catch me.”

Both actors agree “I Do! I Do! is timeless and can appeal to anyone.

“It’s a microcosm for life,” Poynter-Lemaster said. “It’s not all fun and games. It’s a journey. You begin your journey and you are young and have these different milestones. Hopefully if you get the opportunity to live a long and full life, you can reflect on those times in your life as learning times.”

Graham said their characters sum up the show’s meaning in one song — “Marriage is a very good thing, but it’s far from easy but it’s filled this house with love and life.”

While the show is fast-paced with quick costume changes through the ages and events, Poynter-Lemaster said they have some slower moments, which she tends to like the most in plays.

She said her favorite number is “What Is a Woman” because “it’s a reflection on a life and its purpose and then a reaffirmation of the relationship and moving forward into our elder years.”
