Veteran WSU Clallam County Master Gardener Helen McCammon will describe how to make natural looking planters from discarded polystyrene coolers at noon on Thursday, Nov. 14, in the county commissioner’s meeting room of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
According to McCammon, many gardeners have made hypertufa troughs to create natural looking planters. Unfortunately the troughs are often messy to make and too heavy to move once they are made. She will discuss how to prepare the coolers so they become handsome planters that are light yet have the look of natural stone.
McCammon has been a Master Gardener since 2003 and has been involved in many activities involved with recycling. She has experimented with batch and container composting of organics as well as worm composting. Her association with the Native Plant Society of Washington and the North American Rock Garden Society has been instrumental in familiarization of native flora of the region and how it can be appropriately adapted to the home environment.
This presentation is part of the Green Thumb Garden Tips brown bag series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners.
Attendees may bring a lunch. The presentations are free and open to the public. However, donations to help offset copying costs for handouts are accepted.
