Sequim City Band opens Centennial summer

The Sequim City Band presents a concert of beloved American music at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19, in the James Center for the Performing Arts, near the Water Reuse Demonstration Site in Carrie Blake Park.

The first monthly open-air concert of this Centennial season opens with “Star Spangled Banner” and the fitting “Centennial Overture” by John Cacavas.

Director Tyler Benedict leads the band in a program referencing the 1940s and 1950s. In addition to a collage of Aaron Copeland’s works, big band music and selections from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel,” the program includes John Williams’ “Theme from Schindler’s List” and LeRoy Anderson’s “Blue Tango,” which topped the charts in 1951 and started a craze for tango. Valerie Lape of the Peninsula Singers is guest vocalist.

SCB concerts are free. Come with a lawn chair and sun/rain protection.
