Sequim City Band preps ‘Sounds of the Season’

Look for familiar wintertime favorites in a new venue as the Sequim City Band performs its “Sounds of the Season” Holiday Concert.

The group offers a bounty of musical treats for the concert starting at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 17, in the Donna M. Morris Theater at the Field Arts & Events Hall, 201 W. Front St. Port Angeles.

Under the direction of Tyler Benedict, band members say they are thrilled to perform their first full concert on the new stage.

“Performing at a new venue is always a treat, but for us it is a necessity, due to the significant growth in membership in the past few years” Benedict said.

“One of the pieces I look forward to conducting is Alfred Reed’s epic ‘Russian Christmas Music’,” he said.

Other iconic holiday music will include Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” from “The Messiah,” “Pantomime” from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” George Wyle’s “Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” and “Happy Holiday.”

The event is free, although reservations are recommended. Reserve free tickets at fieldhallevents.org/#/events/88833. Band members say they hope children in particular avail themselves of the concert.

In the lobby, children will enjoy a model Polar Express train pulling Christmas cars through a wintry scene and — during the concert — music selections from the movie “The Polar Express,” a 2004 animated adventure fantasy film.

Donations to the volunteer community band are gratefully accepted and will be used to continue providing free family-friendly concerts.

The lobby will open at 1 p.m. so that guests may partake of snacks are drinks and enjoy the scenery from the upper level of Field Hall.

Eight band members donated funds to the band could rent the Field Hall stage for both upcoming concerts on Dec. 17 and March 17 — the latter has an invitation to the Navy Band Northwest to join.
