Stamp Show continues to stick with collectors in Sequim

No need to send away for fun as the Strait Stamp Show returns to join a full weekend of activities.

This is the 31st year for the event that features stamps from across the world and of every niche you can imagine.

The show goes from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 in the Guy Cole Event Center in Carrie Blake Community Park. The show is put on by the Strait Stamp Society.

Club member Bruce Halstead said in a previous interview that “collectors collect anything.”

That includes stamps from specific countries to holidays to animals to things you never would have thought would be on a stamp. The internet creates avenues to explore infinite collecting opportunities, but the Sequim show creates a local opportunity for community and exploring, club members said.

“It’s satisfying to see people come and have a good time,” said club member Cathie Osborn.

Admission is free, and so are some stamps for children.

As tradition, there will be door prizes, multiple exhibits, a penny stamp table, the U.S. Postal Service on site, and snacks.

Club members say the penny table is always a popular table with tens of thousands of stamps from around the world available.

There will also be five vendors including a new stamp dealer to the show from Portland.

Osborn said they encourage people with heirlooms and stamp collections to bring them in for appraisal.

“We’re seeking to bring in collectors of all kinds,” she said.

This year’s special cancellation stamp and cover honors the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe.

The Strait Stamp Show was first held in 1994 at the Sequim Masonic Lodge with encouragement from clubs in Victoria, B.C. The Strait Stamp Society has been meeting for 52 years and continues to hold meetings at 6 p.m. the first Thursday of every month at Sequim Bible Church, 847 N. Sequim Ave.
