Temporary Library closes for move to remodeled Sequim branch

Reopening date still to be announced as holds remain available

Library patrons stocked up for the final full day of the Sequim Temporary Library location on Jan. 31.

Staff anticipate moving materials and operations back into the Sequim Branch Library at 630 N. Sequim Ave. through this month.

On Saturday, library staffers said patrons’ number one question has been when the expanded and renovated space is set to reopen. The reopening date has yet to be determined, they said, but the temporary library at 609 W. Washington St., Suite 21 will be open for holds and returns only from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays in February with outside return boxes available any time. Holds can be made at https://catalog.nols.org.

Mother and daughter Nikki and Acacia Bonura of Sequim were two of the many visitors picking out items on Jan. 31. They visit a few times a week, they said, and they’ll likely return to the temporary space for holds until the renovated library reopens.

Nikki Bonura said the library is “always a positive place to be” and it gives her a sense of community.

Another patron Steve Lee of Sequim said the new library space will be wonderful and give the community a new space to meet and gather.

The weekly Yarn Circle group was the final program held in the temporary library on Jan. 31 with a few attendees saying they’ll be excited to meet in the new conference room.

Corrina Desmarais, older adult services librarian, said she and other staff are excited to move to the new space, particularly for all of its natural light.

The North Olympic Library System (NOLS) closed the Sequim Avenue building on March 10, 2024 to add about 10,000 square feet to the building. It’s anticipated to cost about $10.7 million using mostly timber revenues to pay for the project along with $1.5 million in community donations, and various grants for elements such as solar panels. The temporary library opened April 1, 2024, and NOLS will continue to rent the facility through March as they clear out the building.
