Death by suicide is the 10th leading cause of death among veterans in Washington, with 194 veterans losing their lives to this form of tragedy. Washington is home to approximately 502,000 veterans, 65,000 service members, and over 2 million military and veteran family members who are at higher risk of death by suicide than their civilian counterparts. Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson recently signed a proclamation renewing the state’s dedication to the Governor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among Service Members, Veterans, and Their Families (SMVF). This initiative, in partnership with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), unites all 50 states and five territories in a collaborative effort to implement comprehensive suicide prevention strategies for SMVF.

If you or anyone is experiencing a mental health crisis, please call or text the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988. Press 1 for veterans.
