Veterans Corner: Honor veterans with Wreaths Across America

Michael Trebert Chapter National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host Clallam County’s fourth-annual Wreaths Across America Ceremony, starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16, at Mt. Angeles Memorial Park, 45 Monroe Road, Port Angeles.

The ceremony includes a flag line by the American Legion Riders, a bagpiper and riderless horse salute. Following the ceremony wreaths will be placed on veterans graves. All are welcome to participate. Families are encouraged to attend.

Wreath laying will also take place at Dungeness Cemetery at 11 a.m., and at Sequim View and Gardiner Cemeteries at 1 p.m.

This date is also the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party.

DAV here to assist

Disabled American Veterans Chapter 5 in Sequim is at Worksource, 810 W. Brackett Road, every Wednesday to assist veterans and their families. Their hours are 9 a.m.-2 p.m. for claims and information.

Currently, John Joseph, Derrell Sharp and Rob Brooke — each a veteran — are the three service officers available to help veterans.

A birthday bash

There were 87 in attendance at the recent 248th Marine Corps Birthday Ball, held at 7 Cedars Casino in Blyn.

Marine Sid Gerling received the Mt. Olympus Detachment Marine of the Year award. Nancy Zimmermann received the Associate Member of the Year award. Jeff McFarland, Carl Bradshaw and Steve Deutermann received Detachment Certificate awards for their volunteer efforts throughout the year. Diana Schildknecht, Detachment Adjutant, received a Distinguished Service Award from the Department of Washington Commandant.

Again this year Marines are collecting new unwrapped toys for Toys For Tots. Local businesses have collection boxes inside their stores. They will be at the Sequim Walmart from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Dec. 8-9 and Dec. 15-16.

Help feed our veterans

Sarge’s Veteran Support is asking for aid in feeding the veterans in their program for the holidays. Cost is $20 per veteran for dinner, side dishes and dessert for Christmas and New Year holidays.

Currently they have 12 veterans to feed for the holidays.

You can mail a check to: Sarge’s Veteran Support, 250 Ash Avenue, Forks, WA 98331; or, deposit into their local First Federal branch under the account “Sarge’s Veteran Support.”

Thank you for helping the veterans have a nice, special holiday dinner! They can also use canned goods like soup and chili for their food pantry.

Temporary closure

The Northwest Veterans Resource Center at 216 S. Francis St. in Port Angeles will be closed for the holidays, Dec. 20-Jan. 2. This includes the Clothing Closet and food pantry.

Please plan to see a service officer before or after this closure.

They hope you have happy holidays and look forward to assisting you in 2024!
