The Clallam branch of the American Association of University Women has picked Sequim High School seniors Sage Brown, Rachel Chumley and Stephanie Dunbar as Girls of the Month for April, May and June.
Previous editions listed six other AAUW Girl-of-the-Month award winners: Emily Reis (October), Rachel Hardy (November), Miranda Robertson (December), Audrey Lichten (January), Margaret Norlund (February) and Alice Hastings (March).
The university women’s group selects top students each month of the academic year and honors the students at an end-of-the-year luncheon and awards ceremony. They select one Sequim student for their annual scholarship.
Sage Brown, April
Brown is interested in pursuing careers in veterinary medicine and freelance artistry.
She has won numerous art awards, including being featured in Port Angeles Fine Arts Center’s Emerging Artists Show in her sophomore and junior years and winning the Sequim Education Foundation’s poster contest for both the film festival and engineering challenge events. She took a first-place award at the Sequim Arts Student Art Show as a freshman and earned a merit award as a junior.
Brown is active at the school, participating with in the bowling team for two years, tennis for a year and advanced placement studio art for two years.
She has been named to the high school’s honor roll her freshman through junior years.
Brown enjoys hiking, puzzle games, traveling and being outdoors.
She is the daughter of Holly and Jeff Brown.
Rachel Chumley, May
Chumley plans to attend and graduate from a four-year university, with possible career paths including photography and tourism management.
An honor-roll student each of the past three years, Chumley has earned numerous scholastic awards and also earned varsity letter awards for percussion, choir, ASB and cheerleading.
She’s held numerous school club positions, including ASB executive treasurer, ASB senior class president and Operetta Club vice president, and has been involved with the National Honor Society, Improv Club, International Club, Random Acts of Kindness, Women in Networking, Interact Club, Environmental Club, band, select choir and cheerleading.
Among her community activities and groups are First Teacher, United Way Focus Group, KSQM, Irrigation Festival, Sequim Lavender Festival, Rotary Club of Sequim, Sequim Arts & Crafts Fair and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Outside of school, Chumley enjoys musical theater, athletics, singing, music and photography.
She is the daughter of Grace and Michael Chumley.
Stephanie Dunbar, June
Dunbar plans to attend a four-year university and earn a master’s degree in vocal performance and music therapy, pursuing a career in music therapy.
A finalist for the 2011 American High School Honors Performance Series (honors choir), Dunbar has lettered for two years in choir and took third place as an alto at the 2010 Washington State Solo and Ensemble competition.
At the school, Dunbar is involved with the International Club, Random Acts of Kindness, Operetta Club, National Honor Society and select choir.
Outside of school, she has performed at several events, including a fundraiser for KSQM, a fundraiser for the restoration of a church in Port Townsend and at a Coast Guard retirement ceremony, and she has helped out at a vacation Bible school at Sequim Community Church.
Dunbar enjoys drawing, painting, ceramics and playing the piano.
She is the daughter of Julie and Larry Dunbar.
