Some studious Agnew residents want to help neighbors ready for any disaster that may come their way.
Members of Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and Clallam Ready host Agnew Ready, a public safety and preparedness fair, from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at Agnew Hall, 1241 N. Barr Road, in Port Angeles.
Organizers ask, “How well could you take care of your family if you’re cut off from Sequim and Port Angeles?”
The event features a dozen tables with information on food preservation, water storage, packing to-go bags, and much more.
Clallam County Fire District 3, Clallam Ready Sequim, Clallam County Emergency Management and more will be at the event with agency and preparedness information, Sparky the Fire Dog, activities for children, and Popsicles courtesy of Agnew Grocery.
Steve Johnson, co-owner of Lazy J Tree Farm and a Delta Squad Team 13 CERT member, said if there was a major disaster, Agnew could be cut off from local resources. There are about 3,000 homes in Agnew between Port Angeles and Sequim, and there are only two CERT squads.
“We need far more folks,” said Keith Dekker, a Delta Squad Team 13 CERT member.
Trained CERT members serve as tier II designated responders in disasters that help check on neighbors and direct first responders to those most in need, organizers said.
Agnew Ready will also feature information on Clallam Ready, formerly Neighborhood Watch and Map Your Neighborhood.
One ongoing effort includes neighbors on Gehrke Road preparing for disasters and supporting one another since 2011, co-coordinated by Annie Cortez and Ann Johnson.
