The community is invited to attend the spring School Tour from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22. Lunch is provided. To participate in the tour, park at the Sequim Middle School, 301 W. Hendrickson Road, and join the group riding a school bus to Greywolf Elementary,

Sequim Community School and back to the middle school for lunch. Call Patsene Dashiell, community liaison for the Sequim School District, at 582-3264 with questions or to reserve a spot on the tour and for lunch.

HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Haller’s kindergarten registration is from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, May 2, in the school library. Bring your child for screening.

Children need to be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31. Bring original birth certificate, proof of residency (current bill with physical address, rental agreement, etc.) and immunizations record.

Don’t miss the “Got Heart” open house for parents and students of all ages from

5-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, at the Sequim High School gym, 601 N. Sequim Ave. Learn the secrets of a healthy heart. Discover ways be active, eat well and have more energy.

This is a healthy, fun event for the entire family to learn from and enjoy! Preregister for a drawing for an iPod Shuffle (must be present to win, limit one registration per household). Participate in free health consultations.

There will be fun events, including a healthy cakewalk and informative displays. Haller fifth-graders will have their health fair projects on display.

GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Greywolf students are trying a fun, active and creative way to build social and teamwork skills in P.E. class.

This activity is meant to encourage students to work together in small groups of 4-5. The students use several pieces of equipment at a time to make a bridge to get from one side of the gym to the other. The goal is for students to work together to complete the challenge of getting their entire team and the giant pill (medicine ball) to the other side of the gym without any students directly touching the floor. Once the challenge is completed, the group is given increasingly harder tasks.

Equipment often used includes aerobic steps, medicine ball, Frisbee, large tennis ball, hockey puck, plastic lids and a small flat disc.

Greywolf’s kindergarten screening is scheduled for 3:30-6 p.m. on Thursday,

May 1. Incoming kindergarten students for the 2011-2012 school year will be screened in readiness skills.

SEQUIM HIGH SCHOOL

This year’s Sequim High School Talent Show will showcase a lot of new talent. Some parents have even gotten into the act. As always, it will be a great night of entertainment for all.

The shows are at 7 p.m.  Friday-Saturday, March 18-19, both at at the high school auditorium.

Friday’s winning act will be chosen by a panel of judges.

Saturday’s winner is chosen by the audience, so be sure to cast your ballot. Saturday’s winning act will be announced at school the following Monday.

Prices for this event are $4 for senior citizens and high school students with ASB card, $5 adults and all other students, or $10 for a family.

On Feb. 23, students at Sequim High School participated in the 62nd annual American Mathematics Competitions contest. This contest has grown from a single citywide competition in New York City in 1950 to a sequence of contests involving more than 250,000 students worldwide.

There are two levels of the contest offered in the high school: the AMC-10 for freshmen and sophomores, and the AMC-12 for juniors and seniors.

The students competed for local, regional and national student and school awards.

The contest, which covers high school mathematics, is given in participating schools.

Its purpose is to spur interest in mathematics and develop talent through the excitement of friendly competition at problem solving in a timed format.

This year the top scorer for the AMC-10 was freshman Mikayla Simonson with a score of 66. Second place went to sophomore Ian Jones with 63. Freshman Laurie Miller took third place with a score of 61.5.

For the AMC-12, junior Hailey Estes moved up from her second place AMC-10 finish from last year and was the top scorer this year with a score of 57. Second place in this year’s contest went to junior Katrina Chan with a score of 52.5. In third place was junior Stacy Hanson with a score of 45.

The People First chapter of the Life Skills class of

Sequim High School finally was able to complete its food drive on Thursday, March 3. The drive had been postponed due to snowy weather.

The members wish to thank the many individuals in the Sequim community for their generosity with the donations received. The members collected an enormous amount of food items and well over $100 in cash donations.

Thank you again for helping People First stock the shelves of the Sequim Food Bank.

The High School Profi-ciency Exams testing is

scheduled for March 15-17. Testing times are 8:15 a.m.-10:40 a.m.

Testing is required for all sophomores, and juniors and seniors who have not yet met state standards on reading and/or writing and who did not previously take a high school Washington Assessment of Student Learning math exam.

School will start for freshmen and non-testing juniors and seniors at 10:45 a.m.

Students who need to take the bus will ride it at their regular time. There will not be a second bus run on testing days. Students who arrive early may go to the cafeteria until school starts. The schedule for is posted on our website: www.sequim.k12.wa.us.
