 GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

IXL is a math program based on Washington state math standards. We use students’ MAP data to place them at their “just right” level. We encourage parents to take a look at the www.ixl.com website and see just what fun their children are having while learning math. During our two-week IXL challenge third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students solved 72,368 problems and mastered 1,596 new math skills. The winner of a classroom pizza party was Louise Lemley’s class with 13,927 questions answered and 361 new math skills mastered. Following closely behind with 13,372 questions was Jennifer Lopez’s class that included 3,375 at grade level. In addition, all third-, fourth- and fifth-grade classes had 100 percent of their children do some form of IXL during the challenge. We really appreciate the hard work of our staff and students in completing 72,000 math problems in two weeks. The total was significantly more than we anticipated.

Students have been busy taking Accelerated Reading tests. Accelerated Reading is an online reading program where students read a book from home, in their classroom or in the school library and then take a comprehension test on that book. Students earn points with each test they take. The following students have either met or exceeded their personal AR goal. Congratulations!

HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

A second reading tutor training session will be held from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, in the library. This training time is open to new and current reading tutors. Not only will this be a training opportunity for new tutors, but there will be time set aside for current tutors to brainstorm about what is working well for them with the students and challenges they face. Volunteers interested in signing up to become a reading tutor should call the school office at 582-3200.

SEQUIM MIDDLE SCHOOL

A representative from the Port Angeles Fit Camp recently led Bridget Shingleton’s class through an intense workout, utilizing plyometrics, calisthenics and agility drills. No equipment is required for these types of exercise, as it is all done using the weight of one’s own body. The students were exhausted afterwards but were very interested in the activities. Thanks to parent volunteers for giving their time to this event to help demonstrate positive activities for our students.

SEQUIM COMMUNITY SCHOOL

First Teacher activities:

First Teacher will be closed through Dec. 31 during the Sequim School District’s winter break.

Monday, Jan. 3 — Reading time with Gentle Paws therapy dogs and handlers at 10:30 a.m. Every child attending Reading Time receives a free book. Drop in from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Tuesday, Jan. 4 — WIC (Women, Infants and Children). For more information about the WIC program, contact Pam Walker at 417-2275.

First Teacher is in classroom 4W in Sequim Community School, 220 W. Alder St., next to the playground. Parents of preschoolers come with your children and enjoy activities, the playroom and the playground.
