HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
_ Volunteers were celebrated June 3 at a luncheon in the school library. Staff and students produced an all-out effort to show their appreciation.
This event was a collective effort by teachers, who prepared fabulous dishes of food, and students, who served and waited tables. Attendees got to take home goodie bags and keepsake place mats created from student artwork.
Paraeducator Karen Spoelstra was in charge of decorating, and the library was transformed into a garden-like atmosphere with flowers, cut from paper and freshly cut.
Selected by staff, community members Diana Young and Connie Nelson received special recognition for making a difference with their volunteerism.
Young, in addition to helping in the classroom, is active in the Parent Teacher Organization and serves on the School Advisory Board. Principal Vince Riccobene says over the past four years, she has contributed hundreds and hundreds of hours.
Nelson, a retired reading teacher, helps with tutoring, working on summer projects, sewing book bags for students and even repairing books. Teacher Marla Varner noted that Nelson faithfully comes in several times each week to help out and even brings her own materials.
The staff and students are grateful for all their wonderful volunteers.
_ PTO spring food drive reminder: Please remember to drop off nonperishable food items in the red bins in every pod through June 10. Thank you for your support with this effort to keep children in our community from going hungry.
_ The Sequim Elks Lodge essay contest winners competed at the state level, and fifth-grader Lane Danielson received second place in the fifth-/sixth- grade division. Danielson’s essay was titled "The American Dream: What Is It?" State winners will be judged at the national level in July.

Registration is taking place for the 2010-2011 school year for all students eligible to enter school in the fall. In addition, if your child turns 5 before Aug. 31, 2010, you may register her/him now for kindergarten. Registration packets are on the school district Web site at www.sequim.k12.wa.us, or in the school office during regular school hours.

The Sequim Elks Lodge essay contest winners competed at the state level and winners at the middle school level were seventh-grader Mikey Cobb, who took first place in seventh-/eighth-grade division, and seventh-grader Eli Berg, who took second place in the seventh-/eighth-grade division. State winners will be judged at the national level in July.

Thursday, June 10 at 10 a.m. – Claire Koenigsaecker demonstrates baby sign language, a method in which you and your infant or toddler use specific hand shapes and motions to convey words and meaning with each other. This type of communication can significantly reduce frustration for your little one.
Friday, June 4, at 10 a.m. – Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe storyteller Elaine Grinnell tells Native American stories using handmade drums
Monday, June 14 – Reading Time at 10:30 a.m. Guest reader Patti Swingle from the Sequim Library previews summer library programs. Every child attending Reading Time receives a free book.
First Teacher Volunteer Appreciation Tea is from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in First Teacher room (4W). Volunteers, please stop in and enjoy some light refreshments.
This program could not be a success without individuals who give of their time and talents, including guest readers, Winter Celebration helpers, fundraiser auction/dinner workers, parenting class instructors, child care helpers, clowns, class facilitators, cookie bakers and the list goes on. Thank you!

SEQUIM HIGH SCHOOL
_ Sequim High School’s scholarship awards ceremony was held Wednesday, June 2, at 6 p.m. in the Performing Arts Building. Students received scholarships that totaled $2.1 million, of which $400,000 were provided from local funds!
_ Campus Day on June 3 provided many opportunities for students to sign yearbooks, eat well and have a good time with classmates. Activities included outdoor wall climbing, 3 on 3 basketball tournaments in the gym, a Halo tournament in Mr. Kleinberg’s classroom and a showing of the movie "Avatar" in the auditorium. Foods sold at outdoor booths were sponsored by clubs and included quesadillas (International Club), ice cream sundaes (Band Boosters), sno cones (FFA), frappuccinos (FBLA) and other snacks (freshman class).
_ Graduation ticket distribution for graduating (walking) seniors is Wednesday, June 9. Each walking senior will receive nine tickets and will need to pick up and sign for the tickets in the main office. Family and friends are not allowed to pick up the tickets and lost or stolen tickets will not be replaced. The graduation ceremony takes place at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 11, at the high school stadium.
_ Please note the last opportunity for graduating seniors to purchase a ticket to the all-night senior graduation party is Friday, June 11, from 9-11 a.m. at graduation rehearsal. The all-night graduation party is not a school-sponsored event.
