HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The Burke Museum sent first-graders a Dinosaur Fossil Kit. Inside the kit was information for lessons, including movies, books and a wonderful assortment of fossilized dinosaur bones, as well as casts. Some of the most interesting pieces for Ione Marcy’s class were a cast of a Tyrannosaurus Rex tooth, as well as a set of coprolites, a fancy word for petrified dinosaur poop.

We also took a moment to appreciate the fossilized dinosaur eggshell pieces, encased in stone. The kids were in awe when they realized that they actually held objects from real life over 67 million years ago! All first-graders definitely had a great time delving into the past.

We thank our librarian, Sheri Kruckeberg, for writing the grant that made this possible.

First-grade students are writing opinions. Students brought in a collection they had at home or wrote down a collection of favorite movies, places, etc. Some of the writing we did was our opinion on what we felt should be awarded the first-place award in our collection, the booby prize, whether we agreed with our neighbor and their choice, making sure to give reasons as to why we agreed or disagreed.

Here are some writing samples from Bettina Hoesel’s class:

The first Little Pony I got was in a mystery pack. It was Flutter Shy. I like Flutter Shy the best because she has the same eyes as me. She also likes animals and she likes bunnies, frogs and butterflies. And I like every animal. Willow Tipton

I like my Lego race car driver the best because he goes the fastest. Zoom! Also because he has an awesome racing suit. Everything is awesome! Another reason is his suit is a fancy suit. Also because his car is matching! That’s why I like my race car driver the best. Ronan Clark

My dad’s bed is the best place! I like it in my dad’s bed because it is really comfy and he lets me play on his phone, and we rest, too. That’s why I like my dad’s bed. Max Souza

I started my Pokémon collection because a friend gave me her extras. Then, I bought some. My mom and dad gave me the rest. My least favorite Pokémon is Mukrow because it looks silly. One reason is it doesn’t shine. Also, I don’t like its orange eyes because it makes it look creepy and its clothes make it look creepy, too. That is why Mukrow is my least favorite Pokémon. Emma Gilliam

I like all of my rocks in my collection, but the one with white, gold and a little green is my favorite. If you stand it upright, it looks like a mountain. If you want to see the green, you have to look very close. Joseph Vuckel

Here are some writings from Christine MacDougall Danielson’s first-grade students. In these opinion pieces, they are trying to persuade the reader to agree with them.

I understand why Sophia picked the cat as her favorite, because it has white on it. But I disagree with her. I think that the puppy with the tan body and brown paws is the best. It is the cutest and it is not a cat. It reminds me of my dog, Lucy. That is why it is the best. Julia Reandeau

The winner in my collections is the penguin. She has the cutest eyes in the whole wide world because they are so big. Every time you push in the nose, it looks like a mouth. When you grab the nose it pops back and it looks the same way again. She is so cute and that is why she is the first-place winner. MacKenzie Worley

The little car is the booby prize winner because it won’t stop when I want it to stop. The little car won’t park on the mat. That is why the little car got the booby prize. Kayden Disinski

I like the “Wacky Wednesday” book by Dr. Seuss, because it has the best title. The cover has all the different colors. The pictures are funny. My mom liked this book too when she was little. Inside the book Dr. Seuss uses lots of colors. Dr. Seuss uses lots of funny words. Ryan Spelker

The green marble is the best because green is my favorite color. It has dots inside it. It is made of glass. That is why I picked it. Berlin Echternkamp

I like Steve from Minecraft because Steve is from a video game. Also, I can make him do a handstand. Steve is wearing a T-shirt. I can take Steve apart because he is made with Lego blocks. He has patches on his sleeves and his knees. These are the reasons why I think Steve is the best. Andy Keeler

SEQUIM MIDDLE SCHOOL

Student-led conferences are scheduled for from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday, April 23. Students will have 20 minutes to share their progress with their parent or guardian and Wolfpack advisor. They will use the portfolios they have been working on this school year to show what they have accomplished in school, what they want to do in the future and to talk about their activities both in and out of school.

Parents of current sixth- and seventh-graders will be able to sign off on their students’ elective choices for next year. Parents of current eighth-graders will pick up their students’ high school class requests. Sequim High School counselors will be available if you have questions or changes that need to be made.

Please note this will not be a regular attendance school day; students only will come at their scheduled time. Each student called their parents/guardians during their Wolfpack Advisory class back in early April to schedule a conference appointment. If you have questions, call the school office at 582-3500.
