Good news: Your fire insurance rates should be going down May 1.

Clallam District 3 Fire Chief Steve Vogel said he recently received word that Washington Survey and Rating has lowered the fire rating for both Sequim and Clallam County. The city will drop from a “5” to a “4,” while the county will go from a “6” to a “5.”

The lower the number, the less the insurance companies charge for coverage.

Vogel said since he was named fire chief in 2001, the city’s rating has been steadily dropping. It was a “7” in 2001, he said.

Vogel said the good news is the result of the hard work of many. He said when Ann Hall became the City of Sequim’s fire marshal, that opened the opportunity for the fire department to conduct building inspectors. Following the inspections, he said, “We work with the city to achieve compliance.”

He said new water mains in the western side of the city have also improved water flow, and the city has installed more fire hydrants.

“Manpower is a huge thing, too,” Vogel said. He noted that at every structure fire in the past year between 16-19 firefighters have been present.

Vogel said those who wondered why the city needed a ladder truck will be pleased to learn that also factored into the new rating.

Vogel said it may be a good idea to call your insurance company on May 1, when the change becomes official. “Your rate may drop from $25 to $60,” he said.

Vogel also thanked the taxpayers for their contributions. “Congratulations and thank you for putting your trust in us,” he said. “Thank you for allowing us to get the equipment we need. Without your support we wouldn’t be here.”
