Road crews at the City of Sequim began working around 5 a.m. this morning to clear snow from city streets. The main roads are now clear and crews are working on removing the snow from side streets.

During snow storms, the city crew concentrates on clearing the main arterials first. Washington Street, Sequim Avenue, Fifth Street, Third Avenue, overpasses and school routes (when schools are in session) are the top priorities, city officials said.

In addition to the two large snow plows used for the main arterials, the city also is using two smaller plows attached to 1 ton, four-wheel drive Ford pickups. The smaller plows are being used to clear secondary streets, such as Bell, Cedar and Spruce.

Crews will be spreading magnesium chloride, a liquid de-icing agent, on main arterials, overpasses, and roundabouts throughout cold winter weather. Crews also will utilize the salt truck to handle heavy build-up of packed snow and ice if necessary.

There are 54 miles of city-owned roads and alleyways in the City of Sequim, in addition to parking lots and sidewalks. There are also 19 miles of private streets and roadways within the city limits that the city does not clear.

The city asks the community to help by clearing snow from the sidewalks that adjoin their homes and businesses.
