Clallam County health department announces upgrade to shellfish harvesting

The Strait of Juan de Fuca from Dungeness Spit east to Discovery Bay/Jefferson County line is now open to all species for shellfish harvesting, while Sequim Bay is now only closed to butter and varnish clams, county officials said this week.

The Clallam County Department of Health and Human Services’ Environmental Health Division posted the upgrade announcement on July 27.

All species shellfish harvesting is also open in Strait of Juan de Fuca from Low Point/Lyre River east to Dungeness Spit

Dungeness Bay is closed to butter and varnish clams, while all area ocean beaches remain closed to shellfish harvesting.

These health-related closures are in addition to harvest season closures regulated by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Check the map at doh.wa.gov for all recreational shellfish closures and advisories in effect.

All species means clams (including geoduck), oysters, mussels and other invertebrates such as the moon snail. All areas are closed for the sport harvest of scallops. These closures do not apply to shrimp.
