Charity concert

"Accentuate the Positive" will be presented by Carol Swarbrick Dries at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the Sequim High School auditorium, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

This concert honors Phil and Lynne Rogers, advocates for various local charities who are leaving the area due to medical problems. Proceeds will go to the Sequim Guild of Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Dries has performed on Broadway, in regional theater, TV and motivational seminars. She is president of Sequim’s Readers Theatre Plus.

Tickets are available at First Federal branches in Sequim, Sequim Village Glass in Carlsborg, Port Book and News in Port Angeles, or by calling Rosemary at 683-1244. Tickets cost $20 in advance, $25 at the door.

Breast cancer walk

The first Sequim Breast Cancer Walk is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Sequim Safeway, 680-F W. Washington St., Sequim.

Preregistration is $25 and includes a T-shirt. Call 681-2905.

Horse ride rerouted

The Saturday, Oct. 24, Backcountry Horsemen ride has been rerouted due to logging on parts of the Granny’s Café ride.

The ride begins at 10 a.m. rain or shine.

From Port Angeles, go west on U.S. Highway 101; turn north onto state Highway 112; drive west through Joyce approximately eight miles past Joyce General Store.

Just past Milepost 43, turn south onto East Twin River Road; after two-tenths mile turn west into the parking lot. Yellow Backcountry Horsemen signs will guide you.

Because it is hunting season, wear orange; if you bring a dog, make sure it has orange on it as well.

United Way celebrity baggers

United Way of Clallam County holds its annual Celebrity Bagging event from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. Local celebrities volunteer their time bagging groceries, wearing United Way aprons or Live United T-shirts and distributing fliers to support the current United Way fund drive.

This year’s campaign theme is Live United, with a goal of $1,100,000. It has reached $140,000. Participating stores in Sequim are Safeway, QFC and Sunny Farms Country Store.

Parkinson’s group

cancels meetings

For lack of a coordinator, meetings are suspended for the Sequim Parkinson’s Support Group.

Anyone who is interested is welcome to attend the Parkinson’s Support Group meetings from 10:30 a.m.-noon the fourth Wednesday of the month at the Port Angeles Senior Center, Seventh and Peabody streets, Port Angeles.

Sequim home buyer class

A free class for first-time buyers is from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. It is presented by OlyCAP and Homeward Bound, a community land trust serving Clallam and Jefferson counties. Open to all, the free six-hour class helps maximize purchasing power and provides information about the new $8,000 home buyer tax credit.

Master Gardener training

Applications for the WSU Extension Master Gardener Training program are being accepted.

Classes run Monday, Jan. 25, through March 31 at the Campfire meeting house in Port Angeles. They consist of weekly on-site instruction, supplemented by online instruction.

Trainees learn to identify plant materials, plant problems, insects and insect damage, plant diseases and cultural practices. The training enables students to make recommendations for treatment of horticultural problems and to provide information on safe and effective gardening and landscaping.

Graduates must volunteer as advisors and resource people through plant clinics, demonstration gardens and other programs. For details or an application, call 417-2279.

_ Nancy’s Fashions show and luncheon. 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the senior center. Lunch features fresh quiches, Caesar salad, rolls, dessert and punch/coffee.
