Coffee with the Mayor changes venues
For the next Coffee with the Mayor, staff with the City of Sequim changed the location to the Sequim Council Chambers in the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St. to accommodate a potentially larger crowd. The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m., Thursday, July 25. Mayor Dennis Smith will be at a published location each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern, or make a comment about the City or the community. Guild’s annual sale to help Children’s Hospital
Sponsored by the Sequim Guild of Seattle Children’s Hospital, the 12th annual Garage & Plant Sale is set for 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at three different locations. Shoppers can join in at Sequim residences — 81 Timothy Lane, 92 Hosler Drive or 12 Jesslyn Lane — to purchase items such as river canoe and equipment, plants, collectibles, rattan patio furnishings, bistro set and more. Those who visit all three sites can enter a drawing for a blue/fuchsia retro lady’s bicycle. Pick up a map at any of the three sites.
All proceeds go for uncompensated care and research at Seattle Children’s hospital.

Stand Down set for July 29
The Voices for Veterans Stand Down 2019 event is set for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, July 29, at the Elks Lodge, 555 Otto St., Port Townsend. The event is open to all veterans, including homeless veterans, veterans in need and immediate dependent family members.
A one-day operation offered three times a year on the peninsula (also in May, October) by a non-profit organization founded by veterans for veterans, the Stand Down is designed to provide over 20 different organizations with veteran benefits all located in one place.
Services include: hot meals (breakfast and lunch) medical/dental screening, screening for colon and breast cancer, housing information, employment and education, counseling, legal aid, haircuts, food, pet supplies, new clothing and more.
Free transportation is provided by Jefferson Transit.

Toastmasters share speaker hacks
The public is invited to a special presentation on Speaker Hacks at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, at KSQM Radio Station’s meeting room, 609 W. Washington, Suite 17, off the JCPenney’s parking lot in Sequim.
Organizers say “hacks” are tricks and techniques to help everyone be more effective.
Four experienced Toastmasters will present some of their secrets to public speaking effectiveness, including “Invisible Notes” by Kyle Hall, “Pump It Up or Dial It Back” by Joanna Tavera, “The SHRIMP Speaker Evaluation Method” by Jeffrey Hartman, and “Practice Like a Pro” by Lindy MacLaine.

Volunteer Hospice readies orientations
Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County offers monthly orientations for those interested in volunteering with the organization. August sessions are scheduled for 11 a.m.-noon Thursday, Aug. 1 in Sequim (call 360-775-7806 for directions), and 10 a.m.-11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2 at 810 S. Albert St., Port Angeles.
Volunteer positions are flexible with positions open for equipment delivery and maintenance, front desk reception, and several outreach position.
VHOCC provides end-of-life nursing care, lending medical equipment and supplies, offering education programs, grief support groups, one-on-one bereavement services and practical workshops on living alone all for free.

The Sequim Pioneer Picnic will be held on Sunday, Aug. 4 at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 MacCleay Road. PA’s Day of Play
Port Angeles’ Parks and Recreation Department celebrates National Parks and Recreation Month in July with the second annual “Day of Play” on July 27.
Various organizations host different activities, including the Port Angeles Yacht Club, Feiro Marine Life Center, PA Likes Bikes, Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, Port Angeles Disc Golf Association, Park View Villas, Port Angeles Public Library and the Port Angeles Senior Center.
This year, organizers expand partnerships through the program’s newly created Passports to Fun!
The goal for event-goers is to attend as many events as possible, filling their passports with stickers from each event. Those with the most stickers will be entered to win great prizes from local businesses.

Port Angeles’ Park View Villas hosts BBQ
Village Concepts of Port Angeles, Park View Villas, host their annual “Family BBQ and Car Show” as part of the City of Port Angeles’ “Day of Play” from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. Saturday, July 27. Barks and Brews fundraiser to help Pet Posse
Pet Posse, an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit, hosts a Barks and Brews Fundraiser from 3-7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Peninsula Taproom, 210 W. Washington St. Since November 2014, the group has helped 2,500 pets reunite with their owners in Clallam County and beyond. The fundraiser features door prizes, gifts, food and beer.
Pet Posse volunteers also care for unattended pets whose owners are in the hospital. They also assist veterans and indigent people help say goodbye to an elderly or terminally ill pet. Volunteers have all been trained in CPR and disaster preparedness to assist in a disaster. Using the group’s fully equipped pet ambulance, Pet Posse can transport sick animals to their veterinarians in the Port Angeles and Sequim areas when an owner is unable to, and to an emergency facility in Poulsbo or Silverdale.

Soroptimists looks to support local females
Soroptimist International of Sequim is awarding a cash award of $1,500 to a female enrolled in a non-degree program leading to a certificate or license. An applicant must be enrolled in a vocational or technical school/program or two-year community college. This award can be used for tuition, supplies or other related school expenses.
