SARC presents health talk

The Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center announces its March Health Talk today, March 4, will feature the medical director of the Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness Center, Dr. Kip Tulin.

The event will be in the SARC gymnasium from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Anyone is welcome to come view this free speech and no reservations are required. The main point Tulin will make is good health is not a spectator sport.

OMC board meets in Sequim

The Olympic Medical Center Board of Commissioners meets at 12:30 p.m. today, March 4, in the second floor conference room at the Medical Services Building on the Sequim Campus, 840 N. Fifth Ave.

The agenda includes an update on the Sequim campus and 2015-2017 strategic plan update from CEO Eric Lewis. Call 417-7705 for more information.

Eggs needed at Elk’s

Organizers of the Sequim Elks Lodge’s community Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 4, are in need of clean plastic eggs. Those who can donate are asked to contact Karen Lewis at 3lewis@

q.com or 683-5449, or drop them by the Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road, Monday, Wednesday or Friday, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The April 4 event is open to youths of ages 2-11, with a time to be announced.

SMUG talks Mac set-up

Strait Mac User’s Group will meet at 7 p.m. today, March 4, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles. David Hannon, a local Mac expert, will show how he typically sets up his Macs and why. He also will discuss a few common user mistakes and misunderstandings that he has seen based on many years of in-home Mac troubleshooting and tutoring.

Planners discuss marijuana

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, March 4, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St. in Port Angeles.

Agenda items include the Draft November 2014 Clallam County Shoreline Master Program and an update on recreational marijuana.

Transit picks chair, vice chair

During their January meeting, Clallam Transit System board members selected Forks mayor Bryon Monohon as chairman and Port Angeles councilman Brad Collins as vice chairman for 2015. The board also appointed Clallam County commissioner Bill Peach to a vacant position on the board’s administration and Finance Committee, and county commissioner Jim McEntire to a vacant position on the Operations and Maintenance Committee.

Free beekeeper class set

The North Olympic Peninsula Beekeepers’ Association and the Sunny Farms Store will present “An Introduction to Beekeeping” from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, March 7. The class will be in the back of the Sunny Farms garden building. A wide range of topics for would-be beekeepers will be covered including honeybees, equipment needs, diseases and expectations. Bird migration is topic

“Bird Migration: Why, Where, When and How Birds Migrate” will be the topic Saturday, March 7, the fifth in a series of eight classes for Backyard Birders. From 10 a.m.-noon, Ken Leuthold and Jim Gift will lead an exploration of the world of long-distance flying, without any stopovers to rest or refuel. The next class in this series is Saturday, April 18, “Spring Gardening for Birds” with Joe Holtrop, executive director of the Clallam Conservation District.

Mexican breakfast on tap

The Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, Sequim, is hosting a fundraising Mexican breakfast from 8:30 a.m.-noon Sunday, March 8. The suggested donation is $10. The breakfast includes corn tortillas, cheese and scrambled eggs, tomato-chile salsa, black beans and freshly brewed coffee and tea. All proceeds go to educational programs and projects of Mujeres de Maiz Opportunity Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Thrift shop open Saturday

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guilds Thrift Shop, 206 Bell St., Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, March 7. Featured this month will be early spring fashions and tons of sweaters and coats for everyone until the weather warms up. Jewelry, fashion accessories, kitchenware, furniture and books and puzzles also will be featured. All white-tagged items will be marked half-price. New volunteers and consignors always are needed. Democrats host EDC director

Clallam Economic Development Council Director Bill Greenwood will speak to the Clallam County Democrats at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, at Democratic Headquarters, 124-A First St., Port Angeles. Greenwood will discuss the EDC’s annual report for 2014 and its recently-adopted strategic plan. Time will be allotted for Q&A. The public is invited to attend.

Veterans spaghetti dinner on tap at VFW post

The Sequim Valley Lions Club, with support by 7 Cedars Resort Properties, will host a spaghetti supper to as a thank you to area veterans for their service from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at VFW Post 4760, 169 W. Washington St. Veterans eat free and guests are $5 per plate. Children 5 and under are free. There will be raffles for door prizes.

Save energy with solar

Power Trip Energy of Port Townsend will offer two free “Spin Your Meter Backwards with Solar” workshops at 11:30 a.m. during the Clallam County Home & Lifestyle Show at Port Angeles High School, 304 E. Park Ave. The first is Saturday, March. 14; and the second is Sunday, March 15.

Extension offers beach class

 

Jefferson WSU Extension is offering a new adult education course about beach and marine habitats in Port Townsend. Local and regional experts will share science-based information through hands-on learning in the classroom and in the field. Classes will be from

9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursdays from March 26-April 30. Cost is $120 and an additional deposit of $40 is required, which will be refunded when volunteer hours are completed. Scholarships are available. ‘Midnight in Paris’

First Step Family Support Center presents the 7th Annual Midnight in Paris with a live and silent auction, 50/50 raffle and gourmet dinner from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at C’est Si Bon, 23 Cedar Park Drive, Port Angeles. Tickets are $90 per person. All proceeds go to First Step Family Support Center to promote the healthy development of children and families in Clallam County. Contact Amber at 457-8355 for tickets.

EDC seeks board applicants

The Economic Development Council recently voted to reduce its size and restructure its board of directors and county commissioners are now seeking interest from individuals in private businesses that are members of the council or are willing to become members of the council in each of commissioner districts 1, 2 and 3. Additionally there is an opening for an at-large representative of Clallam County.

Trail now open

Olympic National Park’s Pyramid Peak Trail has reopened after a nearly six-month closure. The trail closed in late August 2014 because of unsafe conditions in a slide-prone area. The park’s trail crew, working with members of the Washington Trails Association, has re-routed the trail around the active slide area. The new route crosses the slide area at a lower elevation, with the goal of providing safer and more sustainable travel.

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at Suncrest Village Retirement Apartments, 251 S. Fifth Ave. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest, and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed.
