EAA to host ‘Flying Start’
Those who have ever thought about learning to fly can find out more at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, as EAA chapter 430 hosts a “Flying Start“ informational program on learning to fly at Port Angeles Fairchild International Airport, 1402 Fairchild Airport Road.
EAA Chapter 430, a local organization that is part of the national Experimental Aviation Association, is dedicated to growing participation in aviation by sharing the ways people can get started in this fun and fulfilling recreation. EAA has about 900 chapters around the world.
The Flying Start program introduces interested individuals to “the endless opportunities and fun that result in earning a pilot’s certificate.”
The event will cover the steps and requirements in learning to fly, provide tips on how to make it economical, and culminates in a free introductory flight.
The program will be held in the Fairchild International Airport Conference Room. Anyone with an aviation interest is invited to attend.

Learn about accessible travel at The Lodge
The Lodge at Sherwood Village hosts “Accessible Travel for the Adventurous Spirit,” the latest in its L.O.D.G.E. Lectures series, at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 13, at 660 W. Evergreen Farm Way.
Guest speaker Johnna Anzures, a seasoned travel agent with personal knowledge of traveling with disabilities, Will discuss the ins and outs of traveling as a person with a disability. Anzures, drawing from her extensive experience, will shed light on the resources, services, and opportunities available that makes travel accessible, while revealing a world of travel possibilities many may not have known existed, event organizers say.
“The journey to accessible travel begins with knowledge and preparation,” says Michelle Headrick, manager/marketing director at The Lodge at Sherwood Village. “We are delighted to host this enlightening lecture as part of our ongoing commitment to providing life-enhancing opportunities for our community.”

Second Welding Day set for May 10
Community members are invited to attend Peninsula College’s free, second annual Open Welding Day event on Friday, May 10, in the welding shop (Building Q) at the Port Angeles campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
Two sessions will be offered. The student session runs from 10 a.m.-noon and the general public session runs from 1-3 p.m. No reservations are needed for the general public session. To schedule student participation, contact Gabi Fenumiai at gfenumiai@pencol.edu or 360-417-6223.
Open Welding Day is geared toward anyone curious about what it’s like to be a welding student at Peninsula College. Attendees will tour the state-of-the-art welding lab and watch demonstrations by current welding students. People can also get hands-on experience with a CNC plasma cutter and MIG welding stations. Prospective students can also talk with instructors and advisors about program specifics and enrollment.
Participants younger than 16 are not allowed to weld and everyone is encouraged, but not required, to bring personal protective gear, like safety glasses and gloves, if possible. Some welding gear will be provided by the college for use during the event.
“Employment opportunities are everywhere for graduates from our program,” Instructor and Welding Program Coordinator Eoin Doherty said. “The industry is in dire need of the next generation of welders, and we are actively placing graduates at employers in our network.”
In addition to businesses on the North Olympic Peninsula, PC welding program graduates have found employment in such varied locations as the Gulf of Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, the Arctic Circle, Israel, Mexico and Slovakia.
Peninsula College offers an Associates of Applied Science in welding.

ONF announces opening dates for campgrounds
The Olympic National Forest will open seasonal campgrounds across the forest all through the month of May, including the Dungeness Forks Campground on Friday, May 10.
Other campground opening dates include:
• Friday, May 17 — Seal Rock Campground (Dosewallips), Klahowya Campground (Forks), Hamma Hamma Campground and Lena Creek Campground (Hamma Hamma), Big Creek Campground (Lake Cushman), Campbell Tree Grove Campground and Gatton Creek Campground (Quinault)
• Wednesday, May 22 — Coho Campground (Wynoochee)
• Friday, May 24 — Collins Campground (Duckabush)
• Friday, May 31 — Falls View Campground (Dosewallips)

‘Honor Thy Mother’ to screen at PC
Join Peninsula College’s Studium Generale and Magic of Cinema for a screening of “Honor Thy Mother,” a film about Bainbridge Island’s Indipino community, at 12:35 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, in Peninsula College’s Little Theater, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.
This screening takes place as part of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, a time to honor the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders in the United States.
The 33-minute documentary highlights the effects of historical trauma on Indipino individuals.
After the screening, Andrew Pascua will host a dialogue. Pascua is a member of the Kwikwetlem First Nation in B.C. Canada. His mother was Kwikwetlem and his father was Ilocano from the Philippines.

Local office open to help disabled veterans
The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) office in the Worksource building, 810 W. Brackett Road, is open 9 a.m.-2 p.m. every Wednesday to serve veterans who are needing help with claims or other information.
Services are free and veterans do not have to be members of DAV to receive assistance.
The office is by walk-in; no appointment is necessary.
