Here is a list of events in the Sequim area this week and next

Jazz dinner dance set

A dazzling night of dining and dancing awaits you with Sequim’s renowned Stardust Big Band and the Sequim High School Jazz Band on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Sequim High School cafeteria, 601 N. Sequim Ave. Doors open at 6 p.m. and music starts at 6:30 p.m.

Dinner will be “Chooz-a-Pasta, Pik-a-Sauce” Italian dinner. Tickets are available during school hours at the Sequim High School office and at the door. Tickets are $15 per person or $25 per couple.

The Jazz Dinner Dance, sponsored by the Sequim High School Band Boosters, supports the Sequim High School band program. Over 100 students perform throughout the year in Sequim and at other venues, such as the Heritage Festival in Disneyland as well as the  Macy’s Parade in Seattle, the Sequim Irrigation Festival Parade and many others.

Mujeres de Maiz to host dinner fundraiser

The 9th Annual Día de Muertos Dinner and Auction will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at at the Masonic Hall, 700 S. Fifth Ave. in Sequim. The event features a vegetarian Mexican dinner, program and silent and live auctions with unique international items. Wine and beer will available. All proceeds go to Mujeres de Maíz Opportunity Foundation, providing access to education to indigenous women and children in Chiapas, Mexico. A $20 donation suggested. No advance tickets. College holds tourney

Peninsula College hosts a free tournament in its gym, 1502 E Lauridsen Blvd, Port Angeles, starting at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1. Sequim varsity basketball plays Forks at 3 p.m. and Neah Bay at 4 p.m. Port Angeles plays Forks at 5 p.m. and Neah Bay at 6 p.m. Sequim’s junior varsity and Port Angeles’ junior varsity play at 7 p.m.

Garden club meets

The Sequim Prairie Garden Club meets at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at the clubhouse in Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St. The meeting begins with “GMOs, Friends or Foes,” a presentation by Jeri Weinhold about the history of genetically engineered organisms. The public is welcome to attend.

A brown bag lunch follows the presentation with coffee and desserts provided by hostesses Charlotte Frazier, Priscilla Hudson, Susan Shiffman and Jane Priest, and then a business meeting. P.C. offers orientation on field of nursing

If you have been thinking about entering the health care field as a nurse, you can learn more about the profession at Peninsula College’s Nursing Orientation Seminar from 2-6 p.m. Nov. 3 on the Port Angeles campus in the Pirate Union Building Conference Room, J47, at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

The presentation will cover general information about the profession of nursing, pre-requisites required for admission, the application process and life as a nursing student.  A panel of current and former nursing students will be present to help answer questions. Recorded attendance will add 10 points to an individual’s nursing application.

Newcomers hosting Thanksgiving buffet

The Newcomers’ Club of the Olympic Peninsula will be having a Thanksgiving buffet Tuesday, Nov. 4, at Joshua’s Restaurant in Port Angeles. Socializing begins at 11:30 a.m. The featured speaker is Reed Aubin, program manager for education of the North Olympic Salmon Coalition. For those who have been here awhile, 3 Crabs was a seafood restaurant on the water at the end of Sequim-Dungeness Way. The NOSC has led an effort to return this area to its natural habitat. Aubin will explain the plans for this area including plans to remove the buildings and restore marshland. RSVP by noon Oct. 31 360-504-2522.

 

Locke to speak on climate change

 

Studium Generale attendees on Nov. 6 will have an opportunity to hear about “Climate Change and Human Health” from  Clallam and Jefferson County Health Officer Tom Locke, MD, MPH. The free presentation will begin at 12:35 pm in the Peninsula College Little Theater.

Locke will present the latest research on the wide range of public health impacts of a changing climate, including the changing patterns of infectious disease outbreaks, heat-related disease, air pollution, extreme weather effects on housing and agriculture, changes in food production and water availability.

MAC users discuss new operating system

Stephen Hart will run a demo of Apple’s newest operating system, Yosemite, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, in the Port Angeles Library, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles. If you are thinking about updating or have just updated and want to see what’s new on your computer, club members with the Strait Macintosh User Group recommend you visit. Trade policy is topic

The Sequim Great Decisions Discussion Group will meet from 10 a.m.-noon Friday, Nov. 7, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. The topic is U.S. trade policy. The suggested background reading for the discussion is the article, “U.S. Trade Policy,” from the “2014 Great Decisions Briefing Book” published by the Foreign Policy Association. Support B&G clubs at auction, dinner

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula will host its 26th annual fundraising auction and dinner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Carroll C. Kendall Unit, 400 W. Fir St., Sequim. Tickets are $125 per person and support club programs and activities in Sequim and Port Angeles.

The Auction & Dinner is the clubs’ largest fundraising effort of the year and contributes close to 20 percent of the annual operating budget. Combined, both clubs serve over 300 children per day.

Craft show in Gardiner

Gardiner Holiday Craft Show will be from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road, Gardiner. Proceeds from photos with Santa support the Walk for Life organization.

Potluck set

Sequim Deaf Coffee House will have a turkey sandwich potluck from noon-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, in Geneva Hall at Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. Sign up for what you can bring. Warm weather gear sought for vets

From Nov. 3-11, Drennan & Ford Funeral Home and Crematory is collecting new or gently used sweaters, warm clothing, blankets, rain gear, gloves, hats, socks and the like to be donated to the Clallam County Voices for Veterans and to be distributed to individual veterans within the county. Everyone in the community is invited to support veterans by donating cold weather clothing to Drennan & Ford, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles, between 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at Suncrest Village Retirement Apartments, 251 S. Fifth Ave. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest, and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.

Thursday, Oct. 30: Apple slaw, orange slices, barbecued pork/bun, baked beans, peaches and cream

Friday, Oct. 31: Harvest soup, Scary Salad w/Curdled Milk and Spider Eggs, Mummy Wrap, Ghostly Gelatin.

Monday, Nov. 3: Green salad w/cottage cheese, lentil/black bean soup, garlic bread, fruit cup

Tuesday, Nov. 4: French onion soup, beef Burgundy, whipped potatoes, green beans, spiced apples

Wednesday, Nov. 5: Green salad, tuna casserole, glazed carrots, fresh strawberries, bran muffins.
