Newcomers group to  hear vision of Sequim

Ever wonder what the Sequim area will look like in 20 years? Come join the Olympic Newcomers’ Club for its March luncheon and find out. The guest speaker will be Chris Hugo, director of Community Development for the City of Sequim, and he will share some of his vision for Sequim’s future and plans to implement this vision. It will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, at The Cedars at Dungeness in the Legends Room, 1965 Woodcock Road, Sequim.

Explorers plan trail walk

The Olympic Peninsula Explorers invite the public to a 5k or 10k free walk on Satuday, Feb. 27. Register from 8:45-9 a.m. at William Shore Memorial Pool, 225 E. Fifth St., Port Angeles. Maps will be provided when you register and all walkers must register.

The walk is on the Discovery Trail from Port Angeles to the Elwha River Bridge and there is a concrete walkway suspended below the bridge, offering walkers a great view of the river.

Library board to meet

The Board of Trustees of the North Olympic Library System meets at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Buy native trees, shrubs

The Clallam Conservation District is selling native trees and shrubs from 9:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, Feb. 27, at Lazy J Tree Farm, 225 Gehrke Road between Port Angeles and Sequim off Old Olympic Highway.

Conifer trees species available for sale include grand fir, shore pine, Sitka spruce and western red cedar. Deciduous trees include big leaf maple, Pacific crabapple and red alder. Deciduous shrubs include Pacific ninebark, red elderberry, serviceberry, thimbleberry and twinberry. Bare-root tree and shrub seedlings are sold in bundles of 10 and 25 and range in price from $15-$25 per bundle.

The Conservation District sells low-cost native plants each year to promote wildlife habitat enhancement and environmentally friendly landscaping.


Sequim Boy Scout Troop  offers lawn aeration service

As a fundraiser for the troop, Boy Scout Troop 1498 is offering lawn aeration services Saturday-Sunday, March 19-20, and Saturday, March 26; cost is $59 for up to one-quarter acre.

Owners need not be home for the service but need to have lawns mowed, underground sprinkler heads marked and dog waste picked up. Make checks payable to Boy Scout Troop 1498.

SMUG to hear security expert

The Strait Mac Users Group will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St. David Hannon, a local Mac expert, will share some helpful systems for managing passwords and using the Internet safely.

This will be a great presentation for anyone wanting to create a simpler and safer computing experience. Refreshments will be served.

 

Apply for Soroptimists grants

Soroptimist International of Sequim announces a call for funding with local agencies in Clallam County.

If your organization’s activities align with the club’s mission statement and your organization would like to be considered as a potential recipient of the club’s 2016-2017 Committed Funds, visit www.sisequim.org for application information. The application deadline is March 11.


OPEN plans vet clinic

The Olympic Peninsula Equine Network will host an Equine Vet Clinic at 11 a.m. Sunday, March 6, at 554 Roupe Road, Sequim. OPEN and Dr. Sean Tuley are working together again offering horse owners reasonable prices on various veterinary procedures at this one-day vet clinic. Procedures include teeth floating and castration. Other routine vet services are available including chiropractic adjustments, X-rays, vaccinations, worming, etc.

Call 360-207-1688 and someone will return the call, or contact OPEN through its Facebook page to make an appointment. A $50 farm call charge is added to each animal and donated to OPEN’s rescue work.


OPAS has new president

Linda Crow was named the new president of the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society at its annual meeting in January. Crow is taking over for past president Kandace Pierce who stepped down from the board after serving nine years. Crow will lead the organization for a one-year term.


Free spay clinics slated

Peninsula Friends Of Animals is sponsoring two free spay/neuter clinics for low-income pet owners on March 9 and March 23 at Sequim Animal Hospital. Twenty cats and 20 dogs will be sponsored. To reserve a space, call 683-4697.


Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.

Friday, Feb. 26: Potato salad, cheeseburger w/fixings, fruit cup

Tuesday, March 1: Green salad, meatloaf, mac/cheese, broccoli/cauliflower, pears

Wednesday, March 2: Coleslaw, sweet/sour chicken, fried rice, stir-fry vegetables, fresh pineapple.
