On Thursday, Sept. 12, deputies from the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, along with an equine veterinarian, served a search warrant on a home on Black Diamond Road and seized one severely underweight horse.

Deputies and Tracey Kellas, Clallam County Sheriff’s Animal Control deputy, investigated the case after receiving reports about the horse.

The horse is now under the protection of the Sheriff’s Office and being treated at a secure location, deputies said.

The horse’s condition is improving, deputies added.

A charge of animal cruelty, second degree, against the horse’s owner are pending.

Officials from the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said they see many animal control-related calls throughout the year, some involving the seizure and care of larger animals such as this, and that their budget to care for such animals is limited.

Those wanting to donate to the care of this horse can make a donation at any First Federal under “Animal Rescue.” Donations also may be dropped off at the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, 2105 West U.S. Highway 101, or a credit card donation can be made by calling 457-8206 — specify for the animal rescue fund.
