Experienced jurist to take oath as Clallam County Superior Court judge

Clallam County Superior Court Judge-Designate Brian Coughenour will be sworn in at 3 p.m. Monday, June 1, at the Clallam County Superior Court in Courtroom I.

Clallam County Superior Court Judge-Designate Brian Coughenour will be sworn in at 3 p.m. Monday, June 1, at the Clallam County Superior Court in Courtroom I.

Judge George L. Wood and Justice Susan Owens will officiate at the ceremony. The event is open to the public and a reception follows.

Coughenour was appointed to the Superior Court bench by Gov. Jay Inslee to replace Wood, who is retiring. He has presided as a Judge Pro Tem in every state and municipal court in Clallam County, including District Court I and II, Superior Court, Juvenile Court, Family Therapeutic Court and Drug Court.

For the past 15 years, Coughenour served as Chief Judge of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe and as Superior Court Commissioner.

He is the judge for Youth at Risk, Child Support and Truancy calendars at the Juvenile Facility and serves regularly on Superior Court calendars to fill in for the sitting judges.

In the community, Coughenour serves as president of the Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Education Foundation. He has coached youth baseball and soccer and has acted in numerous plays for the Port Angeles Light Opera Association, Olympic Theatre Arts and Port Angeles Community Players.

He operates his Sunrise Ranch in Eden Valley where he raises sheep and chickens and tends an organic garden.
