On the east side of town is a small tan and red espresso stand with a lighthouse mounted on the top.

It’s the oldest drive-through latte stand in Sequim and one of only two east of the Sequim Avenue intersection.

Some people might recall having their children’s picture taken with Mr. and Mrs. Claus at the winter wonderland event that used to take place in the specially decorated Santa house. Others declare the drive-through a community landmark.

Known for the past 16 years as Latte 101, its name has been changed to Lighthouse Latte & Gourmet Food.

Changing the name, owner Robin Ferré said, better broadcasts that the drive-through stand offers a complete breakfast and lunch menu besides serving hot and iced espresso drinks – and has been doing so since September 2007.

All the food is made from scratch and served fresh. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are available.

Customers are encouraged to call in their orders ahead of time to prevent waiting in line. Delivery is available.

Out of sight of Washington Street traffic are patio tables with umbrellas and chairs where customers can sit, chat and enjoy the outdoors.

After nearly two decades in business – 12 years under her leadership – Ferré admits that changing the drive-through espresso stand’s image is risky.

But the risk is paying off.

"People are stopping by now saying, ‘I didn’t know you had food,’" Ferré said about her regular customers.

"And people who are just driving by are attracted by the new sign and are stopping by."

Adding food to the menu and changing the business’ name wasn’t an out-of-the-blue decision.

"I looked to see what the need was on this side of town and I aimed to accommodate," Ferré said.

"We like to go the extra mile," she said, noting that she often stashes certain brands of syrup and salad dressing for frequent customers with special requests or dietary needs.

"We have customers who have been coming in here since I bought the place," Ferré said.

"I take pride in the consistency of our staff and customers."

The food on the menu, according to Ferré, is tasty and healthy.

"I eat here every day when I work," she said.

Customers shared kind words about Ferré and her two-person staff.

"The food is always of good quality and quantity, delivered in a timely manner," said Susan Cooper, of the Olympic Medical Cancer Center, who orders food for staff meetings.

"Also, prices are reasonable and that is especially important in this economy."
