Clallam County staff are hopeful that the Blue Mountain Transfer Station, 1024 Blue Mountain Road in Port Angeles, can reopen in a few months in some capacity after a fire on Nov. 10 destroyed the facility.

“We are working to restore service at the facility as soon as possible,” said Bob Martin, Clallam County Public Works administrative director. “We are hopeful partial or interim service will be available, possibly with reduced hours, within 2-3 months.”

Fire officials haven’t determined the cause of the fire to the transfer station that offers trash and recycling services. Clallam County owned the buildings that burned down and leases the site from the Department of Natural Resources while the City of Port Angeles operates the contract with Waste Connections, which operates the facility. The City of Port Angeles partners in an inter-local solid waste disposal agreement with Clallam County and the City of Sequim.  

Craig Fulton, director of Public Works and Utilities for the City of Port Angeles, said their intent is to get the transfer station back in operation and Waste Connections will need to procure new equipment that burned in the fire before reopening.

Customers are referred to the Regional Transfer Station in Port Angeles, 3501 W. 18th St., which offers the same trash and recycling services from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

The City of Sequim offers curbside recycling and trash pickup with glass recycling available at the City of Sequim shop, 169 W. Hemlock St., and in front of the Evergreen Collision Center, 703 E. Washington St.
