Sophomore Abby Jones has been named as Peninsula College Student of the Month for April according to the Associated Student Council.

The 3.90 grade-point average honor student and President’s Medal winner will graduate with an associate degree next month. She is the ASC vice president and also a member of the Pirate women’s basketball team.

Jones, who came to Peninsula from Haines, Alaska, was named the recipient of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Academic Leadership Award last month and earlier this year was named to the 2012-2013 NWAACC All-Academic Team. In 2011-2012, she won the Art Feiro Award as the athlete in women’s basketball who best exemplified leadership, athleticism, academics and citizenship.

Her high school achievements were off the charts. She was class valedictorian, a member of the National Honor Society, a recipient of the National Athlete Merit Award, the Women’s Club Leadership Award and the Emblem Club Leadership Award and received no fewer than 15 scholarships. A four-sport athlete (volleyball, basketball, wrestling, track), she served as team captain for three of them and was a two-year All-State winner and three-year All-Conference.

During her high school years, she also served four years with student government, participated in Big Brothers-Big Sisters Youth Group, taught Sunday School and helped run church camps and vacation bible schools as well as a community fun run. She also worked at the library, recycling center and school office.

“Abby is an amazing young lady with a brilliant future ahead of her,” said Rick Ross, director of athletics and student programs. “She is very deserving of this award.”

Jones plans to study medicine at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., where she also will play basketball for the Boxers.
