Rotary to place American flags to honor Medal of Honor recipients

Sequim Sunshine Rotary members have announced that due to inclement weather and snow on some subscription routes for its Flag Subscription program on Presidents’ Day weekend (Feb 14-17), they’ve switched the honor to this weekend, March 21-25 for Medal of Honor Day (March 25).

According to Rotarians, the day is dedicated to honoring the brave individuals who have received the highest military distinction in the United States — he Medal of Honor.

“This annual observance provides an opportunity to reflect on the valor and selflessness of these extraordinary veterans who have demonstrated unparalleled courage in the face of adversity,” Rotarians said in a press release.

Flags will be picked up in the late afternoon on Tuesday, March 25.

The Olympic Peninsula has four Medal of Honor recipients — Richard B. Anderson, Marvin G. Shields, Francis Bishop, and Thaddeus S. Smith.

The Medal of Honor was first awarded in 1863; since then, more than 3,500 individuals have received this prestigious decoration. The recipients come from all military branches, and their acts of valor have been recognized in conflicts ranging from the Civil War to the present day.

The Sequim Sunrise Rotary Flag Project has Rotarians places about 650 U.S. flags on five holidays — President’s Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day.

The Flag Display Project is the Rotary’s main fundraiser to support their community and international projects and scholarships. Information on how to sign up can be found at https://www.ismyrotaryclub.org/Story/more.cfm?StoryID=131987.

The Sequim Sunrise Rotary meets weekly on Friday Mornings at the Dungeness River Nature Center. Its 75 members are actively involved in improving the local community and the world.
