Sequim students earn spots on WWU honor roll

Three Sequim-area students were named to Western Washington University’s honor roll for spring quarter 2010.

They are Isaac Boekelheide, Lisa Brown and Ethan Gill.

Boekelheide and Brown each posted a 4.0 grade-point average during the quarter.

To qualify for the honor roll at Western, students must complete at least 14 graded credit hours during a quarter and be in the top 10 percent of their class.

First Teacher hosts parent, reading events

The First Teacher classroom (Room 4W at Sequim Community School, 220 W. Alder St.) is home to a number of special times for youths and parents in September.

Monday is reading time, starting at 10:30 a.m. Reading times this month include: Sept. 13 with Kevin Van De Wege; Sept. 20 with Vince Riccobene; and Sept. 27 with Karla Morgan.

Friday is activity time. In September, those activities include: Sept. 3, puzzle day at 10:30 a.m.; Sept. 10, crafts at 10:30 a.m., and; Sept. 17, Kindermusik with Carry Madison at 10 a.m.

From 10 a.m.-noon on Friday, Sept. 24, First Teacher hosts Traffic Safety Day. Children are fitted with helmets and ride around the fun track while learning about vehicle safety. Volunteers from the Sequim Police Department and Clallam County Fire District 3 are scheduled to be on hand.

Sequim trio graduate from WWU

Three Sequim-area students graduated from Western Washington University following the conclusion of spring quarter 2010.

They are Daniel Brooks, a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science; Chris Dal Lee, a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology (pre-physical therapy); and Anneka Morgan, a Bachelor of Music degree in music performance.

Library’s summer reading program concludes

More than 917 children and young adults participated in the North Olympic Library System’s countywide Summer Reading Program, called "Make a Splash – Read!"

The total includes 481 youths in Port Angeles, 271 in Sequim and 165 in Forks. A total of 2,171 young people attended programs at their local library that featured shadow puppets, scientists, a magician, a pirate or even some trained pigs.

Library staff introduced young people to new authors and new subject areas to pique their interest and keep them coming back for more. Prizes and games as well as the special events made reading fun, and thus helped keep their reading skills sharp. This year 15 teen volunteers in Port Angeles and one in Sequim helped out with plans and preparations.

Dogs at the library

Olympic Gentle Paws brings the group’s dogs to the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody Street, from 11 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Sept. 18.

"Our dogs love books but can’t quite say the words, so we are looking for lots of youngsters to come to the library and read to them," says director Chris Cornell. Visitors can bring a book of their own or can read one the group’s selections.

ACT test registration is open

Registration is open for the Oct. 23 ACT achievement test. Students who wish to take the college admission and placement exam must register before Sept. 17.

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam with four sections: English, mathematics, reading and science.

During registration, students may select up to four universities to receive their score reports. All four-year colleges and universities accept ACT scores.

The cost for the ACT test without writing is $33. When combined with the optional ACT Writing Test, the total cost is $48. Students who qualify may apply for a fee waiver through their high school counselor.

Peninsula College included in

2011 ‘military friendly schools’ list

Peninsula College was listed in the 2011 list of Military Friendly Schools recently released by G.I. Jobs, a publication for military transitioners.

The school provides education, transition assistance and job opportunities for military personnel.

The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students. Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools.

Criteria for making the Military Friendly Schools list included efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, results in recruiting military and veteran students and academic accreditations.

STS Foundation seeks exchange student hosts

The STS Foundation, a nonprofit student exchange organization, is looking for families in the Sequim community who are interested in hosting an exchange student during the 2010-2011 school year.

STS is looking for host families for Mark, a 17-year-old boy from Miskok, Hungary, and Georgia, a 17-year-old girl from Mitcham, Australia. Mark says his favorite sport is basketball, which he has played for nine years at a club in his hometown and that history and English are his favorite subjects at school. Georgia says she loves playing soccer and has played for the past 11 years for various clubs in her hometown. She also is fond of creative writing and art.

Host families provide room, board and a safe environment.

ASSE exchange program seeks host families

The ASSE international student exchange program seeks host families for boys and girls from a variety of countries across the globe. Students are 15-18 years old. They are a set of academically select students and speak English.

ASSE students are fully insured and bring their own personal spending money.
