Sequim car crashes knock out power on Christmas Day

A pair of vehicle-versus-power pole incidents knocked out power for Sequim homes in several neighborhoods on Christmas Day, but all drivers avoided injuries.

The first incident occurred on Old Olympic Highway near Towne Road at about 9:30 a.m.

PUD crews completed repairs by 6 p.m. but no power outage was required for those repairs, PUD spokesman Michael Howe said.

A 46-year-old Sequim man hit a pole while on an icy curve, according to Sgt. Shaun Minks of the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office. The driver was uninjured.

A second incident occurred at about 10:15 a.m. off of River Road. Residents in homes in the Silberhorn Road and River Road neighborhoods and surrounding areas were without power until 12:30 p.m.; four homes lost power until about 10:45 p.m.

Minks said a minor from Sequim was driving too fast for conditions when he hit a power pole. The minor was transported to Olympic Medical Center though no injuries were reported on scene, he said.

These two wrecks were both caused by icy roads, Minks said, urging drivers to slow down when there’s ice on the road.

About 700 customers were affected, the PUD said.
