The annual United Way of Clallam County campaign raised more than $1 million – just when it really counted.
Sequim donations averaged more than $400 and totaled more than $200,000. Sharon DelaBarre and Bob Schilling led the Sequim campaign.
On Feb. 12, 175 people gathered to celebrate the work of all the volunteers, employers and donors who helped United Way raise $1,145,249, well exceeding the $1 million goal.
The annual fund drive is comprised of a number of different campaigns, including a mail campaign to homes, and employer campaigns in Sequim, Port Angeles, Forks and Clallam Bay/Sekiu.
The campaign also encompasses Combined Federal Campaign for Federal Employee groups in Clallam, Jefferson and Grays Harbor counties and a Washington state employee Combined Fund Drive for local state employees.
Each year volunteers, many with full-time jobs, take time to organize the United Way campaign in their community or their business.
The 2008 campaign was chaired by Port Angeles School District Superintendant Dr. Gary Cohn and president of the North Olympic Library System board Dr. Susan Cohn.
Their campaign cabinet and totals raised are:

_ Port Angeles – Dan McKeen – $218,496 – 879 donors
_ Forks – Bill Peach and Diana Reaume – $55,483 – 262 donors
_ Employee Campaigns – Karen Meyer – $122,360 – 437 donors
_ County Campaigns – Judith Scott – $25,175 – 58 donors
_ Combined Federal Campaign – LTJG Christian Polyak and LTJG Heather Sharp – $30,751- 176 donors
_ Washington State Employees Combined Fund Drive – Tom Angier – $19,319
_ Corporate Gifts – Brian Kuh – 29 businesses – $57,040
_ Olympic Medical Center – Eric Lewis and Bobby Beeman – 589 donors – $131,362 to United Way and OMC Charities
_ Clallam Bay/Sekiu – Linda Dillard – $1,505 – 22 donors.
_ Joyce – Tom Anderson – $1,165 – 10 donors
United Way also recognized Leadership Donors, those who give $500 or more. In the 2008 campaign, 337 individuals, couples or businesses participated, giving a total of $553,577.
Businesses received awards for 75 percent or more employee participation, 50 percent or more increase in giving, giving $100 or more per employee, and for the most money given.
