SHS students to compete at state symposium

The science research project of Sequim High School students Virginia Everett and Emily Fowler has been selected as one of 17 finalists in the Washington State Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.

Debra Beckett, advisor for the Sequim Science Fair Club, was informed of their invitation to attend the symposium at Seattle Pacific University, March 17-18.

Everett will present the results of their team science research investigation on “Biomechanics of Flower Stems.” She will compete with high school students from Camas, Chehalis, Kennewick, Odessa, Spokane, Tacoma and Vancouver.

Each participating student will present an original research project in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics to a panel of judges and an audience of students, teachers, parents, university faculty and professional scientists.

Students will have the opportunity to win college tuition scholarships. The judges will select five student research projects to attend the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium for April 27-May 1 in San Diego, Calif.

Also attending the Washington symposium are middle school students Katherine Landoni and Maeve Harris from the Sequim Science Fair Club.
