State Route 19 to close for fish barrier removal

State transportation crews continue to work on local roadways to improve fish habitat.

At 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will close State Route 19 from Egg and I Road to Larson Lake Road in Jefferson County for 10 days, to remove and replace a culvert blocking fish passage at Swansonville Creek.

The roadway is scheduled to reopen at 6 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 15.

Traffic will detour around the closure using Center Road and State Route 104. A temporary signal will be placed on SR 104 at Center Road and the highway speed limit will be reduced from 60 miles per hour to 35, between mileposts 4.08 and 4.62.

Access to local roads will be maintained for local traffic on SR 19, but no one will be able to pass through the work zone, transportation department officials noted.

While a portion of SR 19 is closed, crews will excavate the roadway, remove a culvert and install an 18-foot, three-sided box culvert. This work, WSDOT officials say, will allow fish to be able to pass through the creek more easily.

“The water will be slower and simulate a natural creek environment,” transportation representatives said.

The construction is part of WSDOT’s program to improve fish habitat under state highways.
