Therapist earns low-vision credentials

Liz Klawitter, occupational therapist with Olympic Medical Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, has received her certified low-vision therapist credentials through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Educational Professionals.

She also completed a graduate certificate program in low

vision rehabilitation through the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Klawitter spent the past three years working toward these credentials, including an internship at the Hamilton Eye Institute in Memphis, Tenn., in 2008, and a review of competency by a medical director prior to sitting for the final certification exam.

Low-vision rehabilitation involves working with people who have a visual impairment from macular degeneration, diabetes, glaucoma, stroke or brain injury. Klawitter establishes a plan for a patient, including an assessment of how a patient uses the vision they have, identification and training of remaining visual skills, and training in adaptive methods and assistive devices, when appropriate.
