Trey Green Guild members have their fingers crossed for good weather while they prepare for their ninth annual Wine Gala and Auction and fifth annual golf tournament.

Throughout the years the guild’s annual fundraisers have earned nearly $500,000 for Seattle Children’s Hospital. Last year the guild raised more than $80,000 and anticipates another good turnout, Janet Gray, guild member and past president, said.

Guild activities will begin Friday, Sept. 19, with the Trey Green Guild Golf Scramble and barbecue, which will be followed by the guild’s traditional Wine Gala and Auction Saturday, Sept. 20.

“We’ve been pretty consistent with our attendance over the years and have raised at least $75,000 for the past four to five years,” Gray said.

Instead of its usual June date, the guild decided to change the events’ dates to September in hopes of more dependable weather and to avoid the zeal often associated with end of the school year. Although attendance luckily never has been an issue, Gray said, the guild wanted to try changing the date because of some feedback from individuals that wished they could have attended but weren’t able to because of timing. On average about 225 individuals gather from the greater peninsula community for the event, Gray said.

Those attending the event can expect a plentiful supply of wine and beer primarily from local wineries and breweries to taste from their complimentary glass received upon arrival. Live music and silent auctions will start off the evening, followed by a live auction that includes Seattle Seahawks tickets and furniture to weekend getaways.

“I think because Seattle Children’s Hospital isn’t located on the peninsula people don’t always realize how much it actually serves our community,” Gray said.

In the past year, Seattle Children’s Hospital treated 865 individual Clallam County patients, Gray said, including 127 hospital admissions, 2,188 outpatient clinic, short stay, urgent care and emergency room visits, providing more than $1 million in uncompensated care.

Formed in 2006, the Trey Green Guild has developed into a large group of women from the Olympic Peninsula devoted to making sure Seattle Children’s Hospital can continue to provide access to care despite financial constraints.

“I think the guild has been successful because of the relationships we share, especially the close friends of Erin and Art (Green),” Gray said. “It started with a core group of very close friends, but before we knew it the guild has grown to more than 30 women and their families wanting to support.”

Named after the son of one of the founding members, Erin Green, the Trey Green Guild carries on the memory of the Greens’ infant son who died shortly after birth. Despite a normal pregnancy and delivery, a diaphragmatic hernia hampered the development of Trey’s lungs.

It was the genuine ongoing support and expertise provided by staff at Seattle Children’s Hospital, who diagnosed Trey’s cause of death, that helped to inspire Green to honor her son and be active in raising funds to also help other individuals in need of Seattle Children’s Hospital’s care.

“The support from Children’s Hospital was amazing for Erin and myself,” Art Green said. “Throughout the years we’ve heard so many other families that have gone through or are going through similar challenges Erin and I went through and you really begin to understand how vital support and community is.”

A keynote guest attending the event this is year is Mira McCurdy. McCurdy lives in Kingston, but has deep roots in Sequim given she’s the granddaughter of the owners of Oak Table Cafe. McCurdy’s mother, Nikki Nagler McCurdy, will share with guests and the guild about their ongoing relationship with staff at Seattle Children’s Hospital and experiences given McCurdy’s two autoimmune conditions, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and uveitis.

For the past eight years, McCurdy, on average has been a bimonthly patient at Seattle Children’s Hospital and she is a source of inspiration for the Trey Green Guild to continue to grow and raise funds and awareness about the importance of having a resource like Seattle Children’s Hospital.

“I think it’s important for guests to identify with a face and family going through medical challenges,” Gray said.

Because of limited space, RSVPs are recommended, but not required for the Wine Gala and Auction. Registration forms for the golf tournament can be downloaded from the Trey Green Guild website and can either be dropped off or mailed to The Cedars at Dungeness. Pre-registration also is recommended for the golf tournament, but teams can sign up the day of it.
