The local chapter of the American Association of University Women announced its selection of nine Sequim High School senior girls for Girl of the Month awards.

Previous editions listed six other AAUW Girl of the Month award winners.

Sara Marie Schade is the AAUW’s Girl of the Month for March.

A senior at Sequim High School, Schade is enrolled in advanced placement statistics, multimedia, ceramics II, American government, senior literature and physics.

Schade has been a varsity cheerleader for more than two years. She is active with the Random Acts of Kindness Club and was manager for the junior varsity baseball team for one season. She’s earned two varsity letter awards and two scholar-athlete awards.

Schade enjoys art (drawing, painting, ceramics), the outdoors, traveling, writing, reading and animals.

She has worked as a room attendant at Sequim Quality Inn and Suites for parts of the past four years.

Schade plans to study at a four-year college after high school.

"My interests are psychology and art/art history," Schade says. "I hope to obtain a career either as a psychologist or gallery owner."

Her parents are Bill and Nancy Schade.

Alexandra Michelle Whiteside is the AAUW’s Girl of the Month for April.

A senior at Sequim High School, Whiteside is enrolled in senior literature and composition, U.S. government and contemporary issues, math analysis, Spanish III, band and floral.

Whiteside is active with the SHS band, bowling team and softball team. She has been named to the honor roll since 2006.

Whiteside was a Little League umpire for three seasons. She helps take care of her grandparents at an assisted-living residence and once donated hair to Locks of Love.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in history, Whiteside says she’d like to become an officer in the U.S. Army.

Her parents are Lara Whiteside and W. Eric Carlson.

Hallie Katherine Twiss is the AAUW’s Girl of the Month for May.

A senior at Sequim High School, Twiss is enrolled in advanced placement English and composition, percussion, photography, calculus, advanced placement physics and American government/contemporary issues.

Twiss has participated with the high school’s percussion ensemble, Link Crew and Knitting Club. She earned a WIAA scholastic award and varsity letter awards for her participation with the percussion group.

Outside of school, Twiss has done volunteer work for Vision Landscape Nursery, First Teacher and Parenting Matters Foundation. She’s also taken private drum lessons throughout her high school years.

Twiss works at Sunny Farms Country Store.

She plans to attend Eastern Washington University to earn a bachelor’s degree in environmental science or meteorology, to "have a career in one of these fields working for the government or a private organization,’ she says.

Twiss’ parents are Craig Twiss and M. Patsene Dashiell.
