The Olympic Peninsula-based Avalanche select girls basketball squad won the WTA School of Basketball Tourney in Seattle last weekend. It was the team’s first fifth-grade tourney this season and the ninth overall championship for the Avalanche program.
In game one, the Avalanche downed the Puyallup Junior Rams, 39-25, getting nine points from Millie Long and eight points each from Courtney Swan and Sequim’s own Kalli Wiker. In game two, the Avalanche crushed the Northside Swarm, 41-12. Ruth Moss led the team with 10 points while Long and Swan added eight apiece. In the championship tilt, the Avalanche topped ESA Sports Academy, 22-11.
“The girls played outstanding defense this weekend,” coach Joe Marvelle said. “This has been a point of emphasis for us in practice. We have a strong set of reserves on our bench and received some very important contributions from them this weekend as well. If defense wins championships, and I think it does, then the girls showed that this weekend.”
