Big turnout, fast times at 2024 OAT run races

Nearly 400 runners crossed finish lines at the 2024 Olympic Adventure Trail (OAT) Run races on April 13.

The popular annual event again featured a point-to-point 12k, a point-to-point half-marathon and an out-and-back 50k along the Olympic Adventure Trail west of Port Angeles.

The event was hosted by Peninsula Adventure Sports, with support from sponsors Angeles Millworks/Hartnagels, Moss Boutique and Olympic Lodge. It featured an after-party with bonfires, door prizes, hot food by Little Devils Lunchbox and beer garden hosted by 4PA.

Aaron Long of Seattle won in the 50-mile race in 3:46:46, setting a pace of 7:19 per mile. Joseph Pitt of Pendleton, Oregon, was second in 3:57:26.

Suzanne Evans of New Westminster, B.C. won the women’s 50-mile race in 4:54:30, with a 9:30-per-mile pace and placed seventh overall. Noelle Bittner of Sequim was right behind Evans with a 4:57:33 for second among all women and eight overall.

Michael Higuera of Port Angeles was the top local male in the 50-mile race, finishing in 5:09:39.

Fifty nine racers registered times in the 2024 50-miler.

John Mauro of Port Townsend recorded the best half-marathon time, a race conducted with two waves. Racing in the second wave, Maura completed the course in 1:25:10, a 6:39-per-mile pace. Chet Wellington II, racing in the first wave, had the second-best time in 1:27:05.

Natalia Sisolakova of Whistler, B.C., was first among female half-marathoners with a 1:40:27, a 7:51-per-mile pace, and good for 11th overall.

Top Sequim finishers were Jon Donahue, who clocked in at 1:45:14, and Leah Roads, who finished in 2:11:16.

In the combined waves, 212 registered races recorded finishes.

Seattle’s Sam Leighton topped Anthony Degleris of Philadelphia by a little less than two minutes to win the 12k, a race that saw 116 races crossed the finish line.

With an average pace time of 6:27 per mile, Leighton finished in 46:43, with Degleris second in 48:31; they pair finished 1-2 in the 18-29 age category.

Jessica Lechtenberg of Seattle won the women’s OAT 12k in 1:03:29, 47 seconds ahead of Sabrina Grosveld of San Clemente, California.

Colby Wait was the top local male 12k finisher. The Port Angeles resident was fourth overall, finishing in 54:23. Amanda Kiddle of Port Angeles was the top local woman, placing sixth among women and 20th overall in 1:09:38.

William Kittelberge was the top Sequim 12k finisher, placing 30th in 1:11:08 and fourth in the male 40-49 division. Christa Sweers was Sequim’s top female 12k-er, placing 33rd overall (12th among all women) in 1:13.28.
