A new rivalry on the lanes goes to the purple and gold.
Sequim swept cross-peninsula rival Port Angeles in a two-game match on Dec. 5 at Laurel Lanes in Port Angeles, which serves as the “home” venue for both Sequim and, in their inaugural season, the PA Roughriders.
In the first match, Sequim won 5-2 behind a season-best 677-pin series. Kimberly Heintz and Morgan Kayser had 169-pin games and Nikoline Updike with a 153 game.
In the second match, Updike, the Wolves’ anchor, came up needing a spare and at least eight pins to edge the Riders and did exactly that, giving Sequim a 582-581 first game win. Port Angeles rebounded to take game two handily, 628-510.
Sequim, with Updike, Hermione Grafton, Skylar Krzyworz, Tilly Lundstrom and Jovi Weller, rolled 157 and a 181 Baker-format games — both season-highs — to overcome Port Angeles’ advantage in total pins for a 4-3 victory.
“Overall it was a great day, with just about everyone contributing,” SHS coach Randy Perry said.
The victories constituted the first wins of the season for Sequim (2-5), who lost a 4-3 heart-breaker to Bremerton on Nov. 10.
