A trio of well-executed dives in the final round vaulted Sequim high sophomore Mathew Craig to the medal stand this weekend.

Craig scored 275.10 points to take eighth place at the Washington state 2A swimming and diving championships in Federal Way on Feb. 19-20.

Craig was in 15th place after the preliminaries with 113.20 points, but a series of strong dives in the semifinals put him 10th and three strong dives sent Craig on his way to a medal.

Craig scored his highest scores on a back one-and-a-half somersault, and a forward one somersault with half twist — both scoring 30 points.

“We are very proud of and happy for Mathew to have obtained a podium finish this year,” Sequim coach Linda Moats said.

Last season Craig he placed 15th as a freshman.
