Baseball: Despite losses, Wolves earn spot at districts

Sequim’s baseball team took three tough losses as they prepped for this week’s West Central Bi-District tournament.

The Wolves finished the regular season 6-9 in league play and 10-11 overall, earning the Olympic League’s fifth and final seed to the district tournament, where they are seeded 13th.

Olympic rides walks to win

Sequim’s bats were lively but couldn’t quite break through, while Olympic took advantage of some pitching wildness for an 8-1 Trojan victory in Sequim on April 29.

Devyn Dearinger, Zeke Schmadeke, Ethan Staples and Brayden White and each laced doubles but the Wolves left 10 men on base in defeat.

SHS pitchers Staples and and White held Olympic to just five hits but gave up 10 bases on ball. Staples gave up just two earned runs and struck out eight in five innings.

Errors costly in loss to Bucs

The Sequim Wolves struggled in the field, making eight errors in an 8-6 tie-breaking loss to Kingston at home on April 30.

The game featured 15 total errors. Sequim’s Schmadeke and Bryant Laboy combined to allow only six hits and three earned runs, but were hurt by unearned runs. Schmadeke went four innings, allowing three hits and three earned runs while striking out three. Laboy pitched three innings, allowing three hits. He struck out three.

White was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Staples had a hit and an RBI. Logan Doyle hit a double and scored a run and Dearinger scored a run and had an RBI with a sac fly.

NK wins in rout

North Kitsap’s Vikings, ranked No. 6 by RPI in the class 2A state standings, plated seven runs in the first inning in a 15-4 win over Sequim in a makeup game in Poulsbo on May 3.

The Wolves’ White was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Devyn Dearinger had a hit and an RBI. Ayden Holland also had a hit and an RBI.

Postseason play

The West Central Bi-District tournament is set for May 7-11 at various locations. Sixteen teams from the Olympic and South Puget Sound Leagues vie for six berths to the class 2A state tournament.

The district semifinal and championship games are set for May 11 at Central Kitsap in Silverdale, while consolation semis are at higher-seeded teams and the consolation finals are May 11 at Foss High School.
