Peninsula College’s men, currently ranked 10th in the nation’s junior college soccer standings, managed a 2-2 tie with Kwantlen Polytechnic University on Aug. 31 and a 3-1 win over University of the Fraser Valley on Sept. 1.

P.C.’s women, ranked 12th in the nation, fell to Simon Frasier University — the only non-American institution in the NCAA — 2-0 on Saturday, and to University of the Fraser Valley 3-0 on Sunday.

In Saturday’s men’s match, the Pirates were facing a strong Kwantlen Polytech club that was coming off a fourth place finish in the 2012 PACWEST Provincial Championships. P.C. opened the scoring on a goal 15 minutes in by Ash Apollon with an assist by Alex Martinez, but the Eagles tied it at 1-1 by halftime.

The hosts then went out in front 2-1 before Martinez managed to net a score with just 17 minutes remaining off an assist by Canadian Keevan Webb, a freshman from Victoria, to escape with a 2-2 tie.

Sunday’s opponent, the Fraser Valley men, were no slouches either. They were 4-2-0 in preseason play and coming off a 1-0 win over Western Washington University. The host squad scored first but the rest of the match belonged to the Pirates, who answered with a goal by Apollon at the 14-minute mark. Peninsula then took the lead on a goal by Martinez 17 minutes later and then put it out of reach with a goal by Steven Rodriguez just before the half. A staunch P.C. defense, and a strong effort by keepers Angel Guerra and Aaron Zavolokin preserved the 3-1 win.

"These are two great results for us," Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said. “Kwantlen and U. of Fraser Valley are both very strong programs.”

The P.C. women were coming off scrimmage wins over the University of Vancouver Island, University of Victoria and Trinity Lutheran University, but Saturday’s match against high powered Simon Fraser University did not go their way. The Clan, who boast two U.S. national championships in women’s soccer, produced goals in the 57th and 77th minutes, and keeper Simone Tessler of Eugene recorded the shutout.

On Sunday, the Pirates ran into a Fraser Valley club that also proved too strong in a 3-0 loss.

Peninsula’s men (3-0-1) host Columbia Basin for a non-conference match at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. The Pirate women (0-2-0) are idle until Sept. 10 when they travel to Lane (Eugene, Ore.).
