Sequim’s Mike McAleer out-sprinted Ryan Tolberd and Reid Parker for first place as Sequim Middle School’s boys dominated their league cross country meet Sept. 30 in Port Townsend.
The top three finished the 2,400-meter race with times of 9:04.09, 9:04.88 and 9:05.89. Sequim’s Adrian Funston was close behind in fifth place, running a 9:26. Seventh-grader Dallin Despain, who ran a 9:42 and finished eighth overall, rounded out the top five. Sequim won the meet easily with 19 team points, topping Stevens of Port Angeles (48 points) and host Blue Heron (57).
On the girls’ side, Stevens’ Emelia Long edged Sequim’s Jessica Dietzman as the Port Angeles School took the team points win with 23, while Sequim was second with 34 points.
Dietzman finished the course in 9 minutes, 39 seconds. Sequim’s Abby Schroeder finished in fifth place (10:08), Elenor Bryne (10:32) was seventh and teammates Vita Olson (11:56) and Mary McAleer (12:04) finished back-to-back in 11th and 12th place, respectively.
Sequim hosts its next meet against Stevens and Blue Heron on Oct. 7 at Robin Hill Park. The three teams compete in Port Angeles on Oct. 14 and back in Sequim on Oct. 22 before the North Olympic League championship, set for Oct. 27 at Port Angeles’ Lincoln Park.
