Wet weather suspended the final events of the Washington High School Equestrian Teams state meet in Monroe in mid-May, but Sequim’s own Freestyle Fours Drill Team managed a ninth-place finish to cap the team’s weekend.

“Our girls who were at state did an awesome job, both competing or supporting their team members,” Sequim coach Katie Salmon Newton said.

With more than 50 prep teams from across the state competing at the Monroe Fairgrounds from May 13-15, Sequim earned four top-20 placings highlighted by the Freestyle Fours squad of Kelly Anders, Sydney Balkan, Amanda Murphy and Abi Payseno.

Balkan placed 13th in Steer Daubing, Payseno was 15th in Individual Flags and Anders took 16th in Reining.

Payseno was scheduled to compete in Pole Bending but wet conditions forced meet officials to suspend all barrels and poles events until June 5, where pole and barrel events will be completed at the Appleatchee Riders Facility in Wenatchee.
