For tennis players, this tourney resembled a good old-fashioned Civil War – the friendly kind where battles start at love-love and with serves.

Local players dominated the lineup cards and top finisher pairings at the annual Sequim Doubles Tournament, hosted at Sequim High School July 9-11.

With categories ranging from 3.5 to 4.5 (more difficult) and men’s, women’s and mixed categories, the tourney drew a total of 50 players in 36 pairings in mostly round-robin brackets last weekend.

The tournament saw brother-sister pairs (the Hansons and Maloneys), spouse pairs (the Coles and Hastingses), father-daughter combos (the Textors) and mother-daughter pairs (Allison Hastings and Bev Hoffman).

In most cases these pairs hardly needed introductions, as coaches took on former players, brothers battled brothers and high school players battled their own teammates.

“As far as the feedback we got, (the tourney) was very positive,” said Doug Hastings, one of the tournament’s directors. He and his wife, Allison, started the tournament about 12 years ago. “We got positive feedback about lots of matches. The weather was great, dry and not terribly windy. It seemed very positive in terms of the atmosphere.”

The Hastingses took the mixed 4.5 doubles championship, edging Mark and Justine Textor in three sets.

Jeff Brown and Karen Chrisman took the mixed 4.0 doubles title, topping Julien Berg and Bev Hoffman by percentage points.

Christy Brown and Gene Turner won the mixed 3.5 doubles bracket, with Katrina Chan and Greg Robinson in second place.

In men’s action, Doug Hastings and Dave Shargel took top honors in the 4.5 category, with Dave Gibbs and Mark Textor in second. Berg and Mallory Maloney won the men’s 4.0 division title, with Chuck Eldridge and Dave Pemberton in second.

The Jeff Brown/Jim Irvine duo won the 3.5 bracket; teens Byron Boots and Michael Lee were runners-up.

Karen Chrisman and Louise O’Reilly earned top honors in the 4.0 division, edging out daughter-mother combo Allison Hastings and Bev Hoffman. Val Allard and Andul Robinson won the women’s 3.5 bracket, with Judith Duncan and Sandy Schultz finishing second.
