Girls basketball: Wolves close out tough game at CK

Sequim got strong second half finishes from Jolene Vaara and Hannah Bates in a 63-51 non-league win on Dec. 29 at 3A Central Kitsap.

Vaara had 18 points while Hannah Bates added 17 in the win that keeps Sequim undefeated heading into 2023 (4-0 in Olympic League, 8-0 overall).

Sequim held a slim, 42-39 advantage at the end of three quarters but out-scored the Cougars 21-12 in the final frame.

“They were a really good team, but our girls worked hard to get us back in the game,” SHS coach Joclin Julmist said.

Bates and Vaara had seven steals apiece. Vaara had a team-high three blocked shots and Bates sank four 3-pointers.

“Jolene kept us in the game during the first half and Hannah finish the game with an amazing second half,” Julmist said.

“Jolene was amazing the whole game on both sides of the court.”

Jelissa Julmist, who battled foul trouble, had 14 points and a team-best five rebounds.

Sequim was scheduled to play at Kingston on Jan. 3; results were not available at press time.

The Wolves host Olympic on Jan. 5 before matching up with rival Port Angeles on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 10; game time is 7 p.m.
