Girls swimming: Sequim crew headed to districts

It’s on to districts for Sequim High’s girls swim squad.

Four individual swimmers and a pair of relays are set to suit up and vie for top placings and state meet times at the West Central District meet, scheduled for Nov. 5-6 at Hazen High School in Renton.

SHS seniors Lauren Sundin (100 free, 100 backstroke) and Hi’ilei Robinson (5o free, 100 free) are both slated to compete in two individual events, as is sophomore Natalie Cross (200 and 500 free). Freshman Melia Nelson will take part in the 100 butterfly.

Senior Melanie Byrne will join Nelson, Robinson and Sundin in the 200 medley relay, while that same quartet will compete in the 200 free relay.

“(We) hope we have both relays swimming on day two (finals) for districts, and maybe a few individual swims,” Sequim coach Britt Hemphill said.

“Normally I’d be able to look back to last year’s meet and have an idea of what to expect this year. But with 2018 as the most recent Districts meet it’s mostly an unknown beyond what I’ve seen in Olympic League competition.”

Top finishers and those meeting state benchmarks for ech event qualify for the state 2A finals, held Nov. 12-13 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
